ALEC to Right-Wing Bloggers: We Need Your Help!
By Andy Kroll
| Wed Apr. 18, 2012 12:24 PM PDT

The American Legislative Exchange Council, the once-obscure organization that pairs corporations with state lawmakers to draft pro-business and often anti-union legislation for the state level, is in damage control mode. Corporate members such as McDonald's, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Mars, Inc. have cut ties with ALEC after taking heat from a coalition of progressive groups angry over ALEC's "discriminatory" voter ID bills and controversial "Stand Your Ground" self-defense legislation that figures into the Trayvon Martin shooting in central Florida.

To push back, ALEC has turned to the conservative blogosphere for help. As PR Watch reported, Caitlyn Korb, ALEC's director of external relations, told attendees at a Heritage Foundation "Bloggers Briefing" on Tuesday that the campaign against ALEC was "part of a wider effort to shut all of us down." She asked the bloggers for "any and all institutional support" in ALEC's fight against progressive groups, especially when it came to social media. "We're getting absolutely killed in social media venuesTwitter, Facebook, Pinterest," she said. "Any and all new media support you guys can provide would be so helpful, not just to us but to average people who don't know much about this fight but are seeing us really get heavily attacked with very little opposition."

---------

Blogger outreach isn't ALEC's only response to the campaign against it. ALEC has issued a handful of statements decrying the "coordinated and well-funded intimidation campaign" against it and pledging to keep pushing its agenda. In what some progressives touted as a victory, ALEC announced this week that it is eliminating of its "Public Safety and Elections" task force, the group that pushed voter ID bills as well as Stand Your Ground laws. Korb said ALEC will soon launch a new website called "I Stand With ALEC" to rally support. "We need to start fighting back," she said.

3. "NO!"

HAH! All of a sudden Conservative think-tanks are feeling the pressure of "self-censorship"

From corporate sponsors that have for years defunded liberal think tanks!

I think the pendulum is beginning to swing back, thanks to Occupy (and the realization that even the Dems have moved too far to the right, so they have nopony to blame anymore...)

6. I would imagine no.
Just like I've never heard of the DNC having written talking points like the RNC.

7. Maybe it should?

You know, I smelled something when I first heard that a "blogger" who was also a Republican lawyer was the one who allegedly immediately caught that the margins were justified in the Dan Rather debacle.

From then on, I thought that the Republicans planted that version of the memo and had their guy "notice" the justified margins.

Didn't matter that the contents were true and that a secretary said on camera later that she had typed a memo very much like it. It mattered only that the margins were justified.

And a deserter from the Texas Air National Guard who dodged drug testing got a 100% pass for deserting, while a guy who actually went to war was discredited as a liar and a coward.

9. We subscribe to an online Medical News Blog..
Edited on Sat Apr-21-12 11:43 AM by KoKo
and there was a link to a Forbes article about FDA Revisions on Drug Guidelines and embedded in the article was a mention about how "ALEC" is providing a valuable service and that the complaints about it are unjustified. Guy writing the Blog on Med Affairs...is apparently part of the "Manhattan Institute."
:eyes:

You might ask why do we subscribe to this blog and will we delist ourselves. Sad thing is that they do give links to articles we need to know about in the medical legislation field, and they are only one of many we subscribe to. (But, yeah...that was creepy to see)

So, it's definitely begun...the Alec Pushback.. Faux News is probably all over it and Big Pharma and others are pushing buttons along with MIC and the rest. But, at least there has been a victory in getting some of the powerhouse companies to drop sponsorship, and hopefully the push against ALEC can continue and more folks will wake up to what they've already done to their local governments with their "ram through" corporate and conservative agenda.
