Feds: 'Excessive force' by Seattle cops must stop
Source: KOMO 4 News Seattle

SEATTLE - An 11-month investigation by the U.S. Justice Department has found the Seattle Police Department "engages in a pattern of unnecessary and excessive force" in "violation of the Fourth Amendment," federal officials announced Friday.

According to the Justice Department report, Seattle police use force in an "unconstitutional manner nearly 20 percent of the time" and "too quickly resort to the use of impact weapons, such as batons and flashlights."

U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan announced the findings at a Friday morning press conference. She was joined by Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, who flew to Seattle to publicize the report.

Durkan said the Justice Department did not find that Seattle officers engage in a pattern of discriminatory policing against minorities, but the investigation did raise "serious concerns" on this issue.

2. I hope this spreads all over the country. If nothing else, the
OWS movement exposed the frightening level to which America's civilian police forces have been militarized. They treat the American people as if they were invading enemy.

4. The disappointing thing about this was their failure...
to recognize the oppression of minorities on the streets of Seattle.

The final report falls short of condemning the actual brutality that any non-whites face in the city, with the racial-profiling of hispanic drivers, the beating of black youth for doing absolutely nothing wrong, the point-blank shooting of John T. Williams, a Ditidaht First Nation Master Carver, murdered for whittling on a stick of wood.
