Beer distributors fear effects of new legislation, competition
Source: Montgomery Media

Legislation that would privatize the state's liquor store system has many local beer distributors worried that it may force them out of business.

Late last week, House Bill 11 advanced to the full House for consideration, and a vote could come as early as this week. The bill would permit the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to extend Sunday store hours for beer distributors from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., allow them to sell 16-ounce six packs or 16-ounce 12 packs of beer and permit them to sell wine. There is no provision in the current bill for beer distributors to sell 12-ounce six packs.

But it would also allow the sale of cases of beer in supermarkets, delis, bars and any other establishment that holds a liquor license.

"It would essentially put us out of business," said John Chambers, co-owner of Kennett Beverage in Kennett Square. "We'd have to close our doors. We just couldn't compete with places like Wal-Mart."
