Some see Twin Towers blast in architect's design

from msnbc:

By msnbc.com staff

A Dutch architectural firm says its design for a South Korean housing complex is simply meant to convey the feeling of being in the clouds, but others see something they'd rather not remember: the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2011.

"A real media storm has started and we receive threatening emails and calls of angry people calling us Al Qaeda lovers or worse," the firm, MVRDV, posted on its Facebook page on Friday after a Dutch newspaper, the Algemeen Dagblad, published a front-page architectural rendition of the project and the headline: "Inspired by Twin Towers?"

"MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud project evokes regarding 9/11, it was not our intention," MVRDV added. "The Cloud was designed based on parameters such as sunlight, outside spaces, living quality for inhabitants and the city. It is one of many projects in which MVRDV experiments with a raised city level to reinvent the often solitary typology of the skyscraper.

The cloud structure is used to connect the two towers with corridors that also serve as meeting places. The complex is set to open in Seoul in 2015. ............(more)

6. I think it's pretty cool.
Don't forget when the towers where built the most tossed around word to describe them was ugly.

7. Odd, bizarre looking design
very awkward in appearance and just plain ugly.

and it has nothing to do with 9/11.

8. I admit, when I clicked on the link my eyes went to the picture and
I did think it had something to do with the Twin Towers. If the architects say it has nothing to do with them though I believe them. I like the design, it seems like it would make both buildings more stable. But then, if something happened to one, it would affect the other ...? Regardless, imo,the design is amazing and just look at all the additional space.

11. While that's possible...
I think it also enhances safety by providing additional escape routes.

12. A picture is worth a thousand words, isn't it?
I thought the criticism sounded kooky at first. However seeing that picture helps me understand why some see it that way.

14. Yeah, I worry about that architect if he DIDN'T see it
Not whether he intended it, but to not even notice it? I'd say that person is pretty oblivious.

I do wonder why there's only one cluster, and the rest of the building is so boxy. They could have done more with the base or the top or both.

It also looks a little bit like pixelated woody plant cancer.

A really whimsical architect would have put a small building near the base, made up of rectangular boxes of the same size and style as the cloud pieces, piled up at odd angles in a lump.

and don't give a square brick of shit what anyone else says. "Ground Zero" is not the navel of the fucking universe. 9-11 is not the incept date of a New Guilianian Calendar.

You can live in a perpetual bubble of 9-11, or you can try. But the rest of the world will pass you by.

19. Because everything has to be about America, doesn't it?
Travel is a broadening thing. There are a lot of places in the world where "nine-eleven" means that a store was a bit late in opening up.
