Occupy Rochester is seeking a more just distribution of wealth in the country and as a show of support for the group’s position of economic fairness, Eric Hompe and Polly Miller of Morro Bay, Calif., tied the knot amidst tents and protest signs in Washington Square Park tonight.
“I picked Occupy Rochester just to sort of highlight the issues that relate to everything in your life – even your wedding,” said Miller, a former Greece resident. “There are people who have to get divorced because they can’t afford to live in their old age unless they’re separated. There are people who have to get married to get health care. So we wanted to use our happy event as a way to highlight some of the issues of the working class.”
Hompe and Miller said that although theirs was a truly an unusual wedding, it’s represents a truly reasonable cause.
“It’s really just tough for most people to make ends meet these days. It makes me really sad. …It’s time for things to change, it’s time for economic fairness,” Hompe said.
