Occupy Clear Channel - Take Back OUR Airwaves 12/12/11

http://www.mediaactioncenter.net /

OCCUPY CLEAR CHANNEL!

Join us Monday, December 12th for a national action to "Occupy" Clear Channel stations and demand our rights as owners of the radio airwaves.
Clear Channel stations across the country are abandoning progressive talk in favor of even more right-wing stations on our airwaves - in anticipation of an election year. We will let them know that eliminating progressive views and further promoting right wing pro-corporate views to the exclusion of any other thought is not acceptable on our public airwaves.
This will be in conjunction with a physical protest in Sacramento. We will meet at 1440 Ethan Way at Clear Channel's offices in Sacramento Monday morning at 10:30. Then we will go inside to inspect their public files.
And we are asking other people around the country to do inspections of Clear Channel stations on the same day. Can you help in this action to start reclaiming our public airwaves?
It's easy: Just visit your local Clear Channel station on Monday, during normal business hours. Politely tell them you are there to inspect their public files. Because we are the owners of the airwaves, they legally must let you in. If they do not , get their names and write down what they tell you, and let us know. (Details of our rights are at http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/decdoc/public_and_br... . We suggest you print this and carry it with you in case the stations do not well understand our legal right to conduct such inspections. Refer to the section, "The Local Public Inspection File.")
Find out where your local Clear Channel station is here: http://www.clearchannel.com/Radio/StationSearch.aspx ? (You may need to cut and paste into your browser.)
They may ask you for your name and address, and may charge a reasonable amount for photocopying files. They also may observe you as you do your inspection. They may NOT ask you to identify your organization or reason for doing an inspection, and they cannot refuse to provide you with a copy of the file.
Once inside, we suggest you start by looking at the letters file. You will (should) find complaints there; see who is complaining and about what, and how the station is reacting to the community. Also, look through the political files; find out who is buying political ads and for how much money.
You will be amazed at what you find, and you'll find it enormously empowering. Take notes and tell us what you discover.
If you plan to join us, please reply to this email or post on our facebook page before Monday, and we will add your city to our publicity outreach. If we can have people in many cities inspect Clear Channel's files on the same day, we will send a powerful message to Corporate radio station owners that WE own the airwaves, and they must serve our interest - the public interest.

______________________________________

This is reprinted from the website at the first link above.

If you are in a city where you have a Clear Channel station (they lease over 800 of our frequencies so chances are good that they lease a station in your town), please pay the station a visit. After this week's airing of a call to violence against progressives and our elected officials aired on 1510 WLAC AM, it has become apparent that Clear Channel intends to deny access and discriminate on OUR airwaves against Democrats, progressives and liberals.

Please visit a station near you and follow the above procedures. These are YOUR airwaves. Hold Clear Channel accountable for their blatant bias and for their violent rhetoric.

http://www.mediaactioncenter.net /

You should also contact Sue Wilson (Now a DUer SueWilson) and let her know which city you're in and which station you're inspecting.

You can contact her at sue@mediaactioncenter.net

Thanks to all who take part in this National Action Day!

And thanks to bfealk and SueWilson for directing us to this great organization: Media Action Center

1. E-mailed Occupy Nashville with this info
Edited on Sat Dec-10-11 01:10 AM by Tsiyu
Please crosspost and Facebook and twitter this info to get the word out. This can be done at any time during a station's regular business hours, but Monday is a coordinated nationwide effort

I am hoping to do this in a smaller TN city on my way to Georgia, may even hit up an Atlanta station or two!

This could really be a fun exercise of our rights to OUR airwaves.

I hope many Duers can join this effort.

:kick:

Media Action Center wants to know what happens when YOU visit your local Clear Channel Station, so be sure to let them know what happens when you visit your local Clear Channel station for an inspection.

5. Yes they have

I only wish I'd known about this Media Action Center Occupy Clear Channel day sooner. We could have posted this much earlier.

(Can't wait to get some high speed here in the hills!)

Go pay your station a visit, Peeps! Have some fun and make our airwaves an American resource, rather than the propaganda and hate spewing entity they are today.

Don't let Clear Channel shut us out of OUR airwaves any more!

13. Clinton's Tele Communications Act Destroyed Radio
the day after Clinton signed it, the group I was working for was bought by then Jacor aka Clear Channel. Funny thing was, I kept hearing we were going to buy them....so I lost my job, went to a new job and two years later...Clear Channel bought that group, ending their spending spree. In two years Clear Channel bought up most of the important stations in major markets, allowing them to go from owning 3 per market, 2 FM's, 1AM to 8 per market 5FM's & 3AM's.

Thank Bill Clinton for this mess.

But Americans own the airwaves, and we have not demanded that the FCC force Clear Channel to broadcast with the entire community in mind.

It's time to Occupy, hold them accountable, and end Rightwing Hate speech on OUR airwaves.

24. No We Don't
If we did, things would be different.

There used to be a time when I believed that, until I worked in it and was responsible for community outreach. It's a joke, the stations will run community service promo's at 3AM and call it a day. Oh, and the receptionist is usually Hispanic or African-American, thus filling their requirement to hire minorities.
They will sponsor charity events, but they will find paying sponsors - nothing is free those letters and emails have to go into the Public File, never to be seen again.

Come on, you know the right-wing format is far more popular than the progressive stations...these guys are protected, pampered and grossly overpaid. There are no rules anymore - no decency - otherwise Rush Limbaugh would get a slap on the wrist once in a while for his racist, hateful rhetoric.

27. Don't know about you

But I'm only living one life.

I enjoy listening to radio, and I refuse to accept the FCC allowing a corporation like Clear Channel to broadcast messages such as "Progressives Must Die!" as 1510 WLAC AM Nashville did several times over the last two months.

I will not listen to "Shoot Nancy Pelosi!" being loudly yelled over 1510 WLAC Nashville, Clear Channel FOX Affiliate, when I turn on the radio. Calling for the assassination of a duly elected official is an act of terror, is treasonous and is certainly not in the public's best interest.

Think Gabriel Giffords. Think Virginia Tech. Encouraging listeners to shoot people, or inciting them to mortal hatred for a political party - whose leader is the President of the United States, no less - is reckless and dangerous to the community.

I am not going to hear MY airwaves used to air this sort of criminal, discriminatory, violent content.

Some people are here to be thorns in the sides of the evil. We have nothing to lose.

Some people would rather complain and do nothing.

You make your own choice. I've made mine.

31. Not Complaining
I'm just telling you the facts and this fallacy that we somehow own the airwaves just isn't true! Remember when Clear Channel banned The Dixie Chicks from all their CW stations? What good did the FCC do during the Bush years? Unless they get bombarded like they did when Powell Jr, was going to again loosen rules on ownership, they backed off.

Clinton let Clear Channel go from owning 80 stations to 1200.

The FCC is a worthless agency for the consumer, all the do is grant licenses to gigantic media corporations.

But letting the FCC get away with being slackers for the 99% is not an option.

37. reagan killing the fairness doctrine was the root of the problem- it gave lying a green light
they likely would not have found the monopoly so useful if there was actually a need for balance of any kind.

it's overwhelming power in media and politics comes from coordinated repetition from blowhards who are protected by call screeners and have virtually no challenge to their lies in real time.

i'll also bet that the main reason they won that deregulation and got clinton to sign it was that he was weakened then by talk radio. limbaugh was already all over the place on the loudest stations with little or no challenge or correction, successfully swiftboating and obstructing clinton on many things, including health care, supremes, and blue stained dresses.

it doesn't matter that much how many stations are clear channel and how many another monopoly if they all have limbaugh and hannity and beck and savage all over the place overlapping.

8. Thank you and I hope DUers will show up

If you can't make it Monday, pick any day during the business week, during your chosen station's normal business hours. Plan a date with some friends (so you'll have witnesses and you'll also have more eyes to inspect files.)

When you've completed your inspection, let them know at this website: http://www.mediaactioncenter.net /

You may first want to mail a letter of complaint about unfair, violence-inciting broadcasts or denial of access to more than one opinion - whatever your complaint is, log the time and date when you heard the discriminatory, criminal, offensive or indecent broadcast. Don't hesitate to mail a general complaint about broadcast content, either.

A good way to cost the stations money is to mail a complaint, and then inspect files* to see if they have properly logged that complaint. If each violation - for failure to log complaints - incurs a $10,000 fine, a mere 100 people could force Clear Channel to pay a million bucks in penalties. They own over 800 stations. One un-logged complaint per station....you do the math.

(*These files are considered vital, because they are the station's record of how it is serving the needs of the community in which it is licensed.)

The process is described below:

As posted by kharmatrain in another thread,

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

"Two ways to let the station and the FCC know your displeasure:

First is to arrange boycotts and complaints at LOCAL station advertisers. Car Dealers, Food Stores...the more local and visible the better. Nothing will get a station manager's attention than a pissed off advertiser.

The other way to really create hassles for a hate station is to simply send a complaint letter...snail mail, registered (so you have verification that the letter arrived at the station)...then two weeks later, go and visit the station and ask to see the "Public Inspection File". The station can't hem and haw...they must show you that file and if you don't find your letter (remember, you have the receipt that proves you sent it and they recieved it) you can go to the FCC with a complaint that can cost the station upwards of $10k for each violation.

Right now several New York stations are facing some big problems cause their files weren't up-to-date:"

Occupy Clear Channel, so we can have our radio waves back....the bullies and thugs of hate radio must be stopped

28. Occupy Clear Channel all day, every day!
Hi, everyone,

Thank you, Tsiyu, for posting this action!

We chose Monday because November 30, Clear Channel in Sacramento (which launched Rush Limbaugh's career,) just flipped another 50,000 watt FM station to program right wing talk. Our community needs to respond in a timely matter, and we are pleased that so many cities are joining us in solidarity.

But you can go again Tuesday, and Wednesday, and every day all day if you'd like! The more we show up to prove we know we own the airwaves, the better.

If you go, be sure to let me know - before Monday if possible, as we will include your town in our publicity. Sue@MediaActionCenter.net

And definitely take notes and let me know what you discover in those files, Monday if possible!

~Sue

25. They not only control virtually all broadcast media

Clear Channel is now broadcasting hate speech, calling for assassination of our elected Democratic officials and claiming progressives should die. What?

Why does the FCC let bigoted thugs run our airwaves? What is going on at the FCC? If this country elected Obama fair and square, shouldn't I hear even five minutes of pro-Obama broadcast on MY local airwaves? All I hear is a 24/7 Obama Hatefest on every single talk station in my area.

How does this Obama hate speech serve my community? When Obama is my president?

How does constant Democrat/progressive bashing by Clear Channel serve a community where there are two parties? Half of the population is shut out of PUBLIC-owned broadcast.

Enough is enough.

36. Fun indeed

There's no reason not to enjoy yourself while auditing the stations, right?

Clear Channel has certainly enjoyed shutting us out of the airwaves we own.

They've enjoyed tremendous success turning local stations into nonstop anti-Democratic and anti-free speech propaganda outlets.

They've gotten away with advocating murder while the impotent FCC offers them more frequencies to do more damage.

The time has come to say, enough!

Thank you for empowering people to take back the airwaves.

I know there are screeners and it's unlikely any of us will get on the air, but I'm talking about inundating the shows so that the dittoheads have to really wait for their turn to spew their hatred for Obama and anything that isn't Tea Party or neoconservative.

17. WE don't need to call attention to the thugs

They would LOVE that kind of press - and use it to claim "persecution."

No, ignore the thugs. Each individual station is responsible for what it individually broadcasts. By naming and shaming the STATIONS and by complaining to the stations and demanding that they file said remarks, we set them up to have their licenses revoked for not meeting the needs of the communities in which they broadcast.

Don't use the hosts' names, but Google Bomb the hell out of the station call letters, city and frequency, and associate the station with words like violence, terrorism, political discrimination, etc.

12. It's not just Clear Channel
The major right wing station in DC is owned by Cumulus - the second largest radio group in the country.

Until we get the FCC to bring back strict station ownership restrictions - no more than 2 per market - radio will continue to be dominated by the 3 or 4 largest group owners. These owners have absolutely intention of "serving the public interest" and never will. Their only interest is in making larger and larger profits by airing cheap, syndicated programming.

We will do another action this winter to occupy Conservative Talk Radio owned by any corporation. We chose Clear Channel because we had to react to their recent actions.

Read this story by Brad Friedman: http://www.bradblog.com/?p=8974

and mine, posted by Mark Crispin Miller: http://markcrispinmiller.com/2011/12/clear-channel-foul... /

We also have a powerful plan to Occupy the FCC, as you are correct, they are a big part of the problem!

38. great idea, it's really time to get to the root of the problem.
strangely, one of the few progressive stations in my multi state region- 3 that i know of- and the one in albuquerque, is CC.

the RW stations around ABQ are not. cumulous is the big one in NM

maybe this effort could be broadened to all RW stations. almost all are exclusively RW.

just saw this all late - have to help a friend with his burned down house or i'd go to the cumulus station tomorrow, about 80 miles away. might still be able to do it.

the big CC station in denver is KOA, reaches 30 something states at night- i hope it gets some requests, it's been screwing up colorado politics for decades.
