Lennon, you magnificent bastard!
I read your books.

I loved your songs.

I miss you.

Part of me suspects that I'm a loser, and the other part of me thinks I'm God Almighty.

2. Thanks
I woke up sad, wondering if/how Lennon would be remembered today. I discourage "hero worshipping" but......

5. When Goldman's smear of a bio came out in the late '80s
People Magazine published "shocking" excerpts from it.

Normally, I don't read People unless it's the only thing available in the magazine rack of a waiting room. But as a Lennon fan, I was interested in finding out what his dark "secret life" was all about, the one the cover claimed "his fans never knew." So I got a copy.

What a load of crap it turned out to be. It wasn't that the salacious details weren't true, per se; it was the fact that there was nothing in this alleged expose that Lennon had not already revealed himself in numerous interviews (especially in the Playboy and Rolling Stone interviews).

I love Lennon's work and have been deeply inspired by his music, writing, and activism. However, I never idolized him, mainly because as a fan, I had read so many of these brutally honest interviews with him (along with books about the Beatles) and I had a sense of what a conflicted, all-too-human man he was.

But, in many ways, his honesty and these flaws, coupled with his extraordinary talent, made him all the more admirable to me.

So I wrote a letter to People (which they actually published). Paraphrasing Oscar Wilde, I basically said that although Lennon was in the gutter with the rest of us, he was one of the few who pointed out the beauty of the stars and sky above.

How many people today, especially among our celebrities, can we honestly say that about anymore?

4. "The love you take
is equal to the love you make." The older I get, the more I see the absolute truth of those words.

the recs, the pictures and the memories. Life *is* what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

Reckon we all found *that* out the hard way!
