Justice (Sotomayor) Writes To Student

When Lincoln Middle School seventh-grader Priscilla Dueñas agreed to write an extra-credit essay in her Spanish class, she never dreamed the subject of her essay, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, would read it.

She found out that’s exactly what happened when a letter dated Nov. 3 from Sotomayor arrived at the Rio Rancho school for her.

“I almost cried when I got it,” the 12-year-old student said. “I never thought I would be recognized by someone so important in the country, and someone I look up to.”

As part of an assignment given to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Dueñas’ Spanish teacher, Iracema Pell, told her students to write an essay about a Hispanic person who has had an impact on society.
