Grijalva Calls For Arpaio To Resign Over Alleged Botched Sex-Crime Cases
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/12/grija...

Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva called for Joe Arpaio to resign after accusations that the Maricopa County Sheriff botched over 400 sex-crime investigations in a period of three years.

This nothing-to-see-here attitude is the worst kind of unaccountable arrogance, and Mr. Arpaio needs to step down before any more damage is done to public confidence in our law enforcement and justice system, Grijalva (D) said Monday in a press release. The picture emerging - no follow-up, no investigation, no prosecution, no justice and a shield of silence after the fact - is not how we conduct law enforcement in this country.

Mr. Arpaio might love headline-grabbing crackdowns and theatrical media appearances, Grijalva continue, but when it comes to the everyday work of keeping people safe, he seems to have lost interest some time ago. He should give the affected families a sense that justice is finally being done by taking the honorable route and resigning now.

The AP reported over the weekend that current and former police officers accuse Arpaio of inadequately investigating over 400 sex-crimes, or not investigating them at all. Many of the cases involved illegal immigrants.

1. I read the story. Turns out there is one way to not be investigated as an illegal immigrant...

If you are an illegal immigrant who also happens to be a pedophile.

There was a case where the wife called not once but TWICE to report that her husband was diddling their 3 year old girl. Not one investigation was done. Ironically the guy was an illegal immigrant too.

In El Mirage alone, where Arpaio's office was providing contract police services, officials discovered at least 32 reported child molestations - with victims as young as 2 years old - where the sheriff's office failed to follow through, even though suspects were known in all but six cases.

Many of the victims, said a retired El Mirage police official who reviewed the files, were children of illegal immigrants

2. I knew that guy was an asshole--I just didn't know he was an asshole in terms of
how he mismanaged sex crimes, as well.

Bastard.

I hope this effort succeeds.

5. You have my sympathy. The national audience sees pink underwear and
bologna sandwiches, but I can imagine how horrible it must be to live in that guy's little fiefdom--he does have that authoritarian "I am the law" attitude, and that's not consonant with "justice." IMO.

6. That's GREEN bogna, podner.
I left Phoenix in 2003. The largest municipalities around Phoenix have their own police forces. The Sheriff patrols the large, mostly desert county surroundings.

Mostly they stop people on the Interstate, give out tickets, sniff 'em for dope, and check their papers. Hard to imagine them investigating real crimes.

9. Arpaio: Grijalva Is The One Who Should Resign
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/12/arpai...

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio dismissed Rep. Raul Grijalvas calls for his resignation, saying that Grijalva just doesnt like Arpaios immigration policies, and he is the one who should resign.

In a press conference Monday, Arpaio addressed allegations by current and former law enforcement officials that he botched over 400 sex crime cases, including child molestations, a number of which were brought forward by illegal immigrants.

Arpaio said that his office took immediate action when it learned about the discrepancies in the cases that were investigated, according to tweets by Arizona Republic reporter Yvonne Wingett Sanchez, who was at the press conference. He added that they consider these investigations serious.
