$100,000 drops from van in Upper St. Clair
Thursday, December 01, 2011
By Liz Navratil, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

More than $100,000 went missing Wednesday after the doors of a bank courier van popped open in Upper St. Clair, prompting people to gather in a frenzy as cash flew through the wind.
Police Lt. James Englert said people had pulled over to the side of the road and were scrambling to grab bills when officers arrived near the intersection of Route 19 and Boyce Road about 1 p.m.
Some of the booty was blowing about.
Just moments earlier, another driver had flagged down the driver of the van owned by Fidelity Courier Services in Sharon, Pa., to tell him his back doors had flown open and he was dropping cash onto the roadway.
Officers collected about $400, but several plastic bags of cash totaling "well into six figures" remained missing Wednesday night, Lt. Englert said.
People who don't return the dough could face theft charges.
"This is not a free-for-all situation," Lt. Englert said. "Obviously, this money is ... bank property."
Police intend to give people who might not have realized what was happening a reasonable amount of time to "come to their senses" and return the missing cash, Lt. Englert said.

The courier company is offering a reward to anyone who returns the money, police said.

In the meantime, police are asking anyone who might have seen the flying cash or have taken photos or video of the chaos to contact them at 412-833-7500.

1. Uh, if $100 dollar bills
were floating around in the wind, and I knew they came from a bank bag, I'd quietly gather what I could and leave. You know their insurance company is going to take care of it.

I'm sorry if I'm horrible, but I sincerely doubt that many other people would do differently. If anything, a kindness would be to donate it to charity after quietly gathering what you could. If it was from a mom and pop business? That's a totally different story. But from some big bank?

3. The currency was in plastic bags.
Some broke open, but some did not.

The police are really interested in people who grabbed intact bags and left the scene. A black pickup in particular, for which they have a partial on the license.

2. What bank is cheaping out and using a local van service to ship currency?
Banks use vans to move checks, loan agreements, and other paperwork that is not so negotiable.

4. Cue the people justifying such a move saying it's "Cost effective"
And everyone that gathered up the money deserves to be burned at the stake.
