Let's play a game: I hand you $10,000.
Edited on Wed Nov-30-11 11:14 PM by Occulus
What is the first thing you think of doing with it?

No re-rolls on this one. The first thing.

edit: mine was to pay off my own debts. It would leave me with a little left over to bank or play with in whatever fashion.

Oooh. *stares off dreamily* Then I could get started paying off my other legal bill. Fighting to protect my kids in two custody battles in less than two years was damn expensive.

Then evaluate what best to pay off/down first.

Well, that's the FIRST thing. Lots to consider.

His teeth are completely rotted out. He has enough going against him already, but proper dental care might open a door or two for him.

26. Put it in a safe place so I can make the co-pay when I get my knees replaced
Which may be as soon as this coming year.

I found out that my orthopedic surgeon and the hospital he uses is not in my insurance's network so I will have to pay 30% of the cost. According to the figures I have found, knee replacement costs about $45,000 and I hope to get both done at the same time. Maybe that will cut the total cost a little since there will only be one hospital and one rehab stay. But it will still be a bundle out of pocket.

If I had not just gotten a windfall and paid off all my debts, that would have been first on my list.

29. What's your knee problem? I've had BOTH ACL's reconstructed using patellar tendon transplants.
My Orthopod told me I'd need them both replaced at some point due to the meniscus damage. They are both arthritic. I'm 50 now, and don't think I can stand the pain and soreness for another ten years.

45k per? Ouch!

38. I've just flat out worn them out
Had the medial meniscus removed on the left knee in 2001, on the right in 2007. No bone sheath left on the ends of the bones so it's just eroded bone ends rubbing against each other. When the surgeon worked on the left knee he gave me ten years before knee replacement. When he worked on the right one, he said maybe I still had ten years left, but to talk to him when I couldn't stand the pain any more.

I can't walk much anymore. Even a short shopping trip is very painful and that evening the swelling and inflammation are severe. The next day I will have enough swelling that bending the knees is difficult. I went to a needlework convention in September and the only way I made it through was that I bought a cheap scooter on Craigslist - for cheaper than renting one would cost or even than my co-pay would have been.

I turn 60 next year and I have things I really want to do that require being able to walk at least SOME!

The other problem is that I can no longer move around enough to keep my muscles in shape. I'm seeing my GP tomorrow and will talk to him about therapy and exercises. If I get too much more out of shape I won't be a candidate for knee replacement, I fear.

Getting old sucks.
