Legislation That Would Ban Sales Of Cold Medicine To Teenagers Makes Progress

CRANFORD, N.J. (CBS 2) – Proposed legislation that would ban the sale of some brands of cough and cold medicines to kids under the age of 18 is making progress in New Jersey.

The New Jersey State Assembly and Public Safety Committee have advanced the bill, which they say would prevent the abuse of the cough suppressants by teenagers.

So far, residents are agreeing with the legislation.

“If it’s harmful to children, it’s better to monitor and regulate it,” Stacey Goldfarb, of Paramus, said.

"Son, I am really ill with the flu, can you run out and get me something?"

"Sorry dad, I am only 17, you will have go there and get other people sick."

3. As brought to you by the War on Drugs
I would suspect the ban is due to some people getting high on certain kinds of cough syrup (that is as long as you can gag down a bunch of cherry flavored cough syrup with puking your guts out). I can see it now teenagers standing outside Rite Aid and as a stranger walks up they approach him and ask 'Hey dude do you think you could score me some Robitusin'.

4. This is already happening in some big stores in the Chicago area.
I always get asked to show ID when buying cough syrup at CVS here. I could in NO WAY pass for a teenager, that's for sure.

I think it's overprotective stupidity.
