Steroid Abuse and Excessive Force by Police
............... Drug abuse? Yes, and the drugs that police are abusing are anabolic steroids according to the DEA:

The badge and a steroid-filled syringe -- it's not the typical image most have for the abuse of performance-enhancing drugs. But as more within law enforcement get nabbed in steroid investigations nationwide, observers say that usage levels among police officers could rival the seediest patches of the pro sports landscape.

"It's a big problem, and from the number of cases, it's something we shouldn't ignore," Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman Lawrence Payne told AOL News. "It's not that we set out to target cops, but when we're in the middle of an active investigation into steroids, there have been quite a few cases that have led back to police officers."

.....................................

From Boston to Arizona, police departments are investigating a growing number of incidents involving uniformed police officers using steroids. So-called "juicing" has been anecdotally associated with several brutality cases, including the 1997 sodomizing of Haitian immigrant Abner Louima in New York City.

....................

Although the traditional reason for the use of AASs is to improve athletic performance, AASs also appeal to officers wanting a tactical edge or an intimidating appearance. Unlike with other forms of drug abuse, steroid users do not take their drug recreationally; on the contrary, some state they need these drugs in order to do their job effectively or improve their “job performance.” From street officers who consider themselves vulnerable to bigger, more aggressive criminals to special-assignment officers who are regularly tested for their physical abilities, officers are turning to performance-enhancing drugs such as AASs and HGH as a shortcut to improved performance. This article will not delve into the abuse of HGH, which is not a controlled substance but is obtained by prescription only and has very limited use—none for normal adults.

2. "Abner Louima in New York City"
I remember NPR covering that story. Pervert with a badge
I wonder if that cop got hired by Blackwater/Xe eventually.

9. Interesting you mention Abner Loiuma. He is now working on ending police brutality.
Justin Volpe, the brutalizer, was sentenced to 30 years in 1999. He'll be in his late 60's when he gets out of prison.

There was another cop who covered it up, and he got five years in 2002.

5. I knew a Body Builder in the 80s who used steroids at our furiture factory
Boy was he aggressive and abusive when they came on. He admitted that they made him aggressive
and messed him up but he keep on taking them and was fired not because he was under the influence but his behavior.

When he wasn't under them he was really a OK type of guy.

7. This cries out for a L&O episode, or maybe a Southland ep.
Okay, it also cries out for real restrictions on this type of doping, and, you know, actual consequences for those who ignore them.

8. I doubt cops hit the Ragu more than anyone else.
You just do not hear much about it with other folks; however, if you think it is just big muscle heads, football players, and cops that are using performance enhancements, you are crazy.
