Update on the teen who sent out the bad tweet about Governor Brownback

In a nutshell, Emma, an 18 year old high school senior at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, KS, was on a school field trip in the state capitol building with a group of teenagers. The governor spoke to the group and while he was speaking Emma sent out the following tweet to her 60 followers:

Just made mean comments at gov. brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot

The governor's communications director (who apparently has a full time job monitoring the internet for mentions of her boss) found the tweet in a Google search and contacted the Youth in Government program, which organized the students’ visit to the capital. Emma's high school was also contacted. The principal called Emma into the office, talked to her for an hour and told her she had to write letters apologizing to the governor, the Youth in Government group that sponsored the field trip and to the Social Studies department at the school. He also told Emma the school would be including a report of this incident with her college recommendations.

The story hit the local media yesterday morning and then literally exploded on Twitter and Facebook. #heblowsalot was trending for quite awhile on Twitter yesterday. Also #Brownbackblowsalot. On Facebook, people are including Brownback's name in their posts to give his staff something to do over this holiday weekend.

The Shawnee Mission school board meets on Monday night. There will be people there speaking out against Emma's punishment and asking for it to be rescinded. We are also planning a petition to Brownback asking him to take a refresher course on the first amendment.

I'll keep you posted on further developments.
