Historian shouts down congressman at hearing
Source: Cspan/ Yahoo News

Snip< The topic at hand was drilling in the the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The trouble began when Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young misstated Brinkley's name after referring to the hearing as "an exercise in futility." In a certain breach of protocol, Brinkley cut him off.

Congressmen Young has been in office 38 years, am I the only who sees the need for term limits?

1. the story leaves out the esteemed Congressman calling his testimony "garbage"
and that asshole chair, scolding Brinkley over "comity", didn't seem to have a problem with Young's "garbage" comment.

Very proud of Prof. Brinkley. :patriot:

2. Brinkley should have thrown Congress's 9% approval rating in Young's face
and then turned around and mooned him. The only problem with that is that it would be showing Young too much respect.

4. Term limits won't help
The PTB will get another puppet.

Meanwhile, you'll be forcing out anyone who's actually good.

Elections are term limits. At least they would be if the public paid attention.

15. And all they would do is graft all that much harder to make up for lost time.
While often appealing, this knowledge always keeps me from supporting TL's. Your point about elections is also very solid.

6. Term limits: helps only the RW....RW can afford to buy ads to get name recognition for new guys
new guys every few yrs.

The LW can't afford the ads

Result: with name recognition, the RW will usually win.

Oppose term limits if you like the LW.

9. Term limits in the California has resulted in increased influence of lobbyists.
Why, because the lobbyists, and the companies that they work for, understand the system and know how to work it far better than a neophyte.

11. I don't want term limits to eliminate my very anti-war, progressive rep. Talk to the people...
Who voted this creature into office repeatedly, they're the source. Enforce term limits to get rid of him, and they'll elect another one who may be younger, but will be just as odious, if not worse, with corporate money.

Term limits are a right wing thing, started to make sure than another popular Democrat like FDR couldn't serve long enough to stymie the RW's preference for fascist rule. Although the idea has floated several times since, when people were dissatisfied with politicians as a whole and it hasn't worked.

But the RW wanted to abolish limits so GWB could be in office forever. It's the voters that elected this character that are in charge. Would you have wanted to lose Teddy Kennedy, Bernie Sanders, Russ Feingold and others to the 'new is always better' idea?

Term limits are a sham solution to change the behavior of officials. A good person who stands faithful to the ideas of the people who voted for them should not be arbitrarily be removed from office.

Just my opinion.

:hi:

12. RE: term limits. Three words. Senator Ted Kennedy.
I am so proud of my rep, too. I would hate to see him arbitrarily disqualified from serving.
