People sleeping outside to get free turkey

Thousands of people will begin their Thanksgiving feasts a little early as philanthropic groups across Southern California begin handing out turkey dinners and other food items Tuesday.

Perhaps the largest feast is set to take place in South L.A., where the Jackson Limousine Service will give away about 10,000 dinners for the 23rd year in a row.

The event, held in the company’s fleet yard at 3669 W. Slauson Ave., wasn't to begin distributing food until 8 a.m., but a dispatcher for the limousine service said that a “couple hundred” people were already lined up down the block.

Dispatcher Will Linly said the first person in line came six days ago.

“He said he wanted to make sure he got his turkey dinner,” Linly said, adding that a handful of early arriving people were given a tour bus to sleep in during this weekend’s rain.
