After delivering gifts to the Central Nebraska Humane Society on her birthday Monday, Miranda Brumley of Grand Island meets Angus T. Loner. Miranda asked all her friends to give her items for the Humane Society for her 8th birthday. Behind Miranda is her sister, Felicia.

WORLD-HERALD NEWS SERVICE

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Second-grader Miranda Brumley celebrated her birthday with lots of her friends on Sunday, one day before she officially turned 8.

On Monday, Miranda shared her joy with the dogs and cats at the Central Nebraska Humane Society by bringing her "presents" to the animal shelter: dog food, cat food, kitty litter, cleaning supplies and office supplies.

Miranda, the daughter of Craig and Jessica Brumley, made the trip to the Humane Society with her mother; 2-year-old sister, Felicia; and a 5-year-old friend, Eva Melgoza.

Jessica Brumley said that when she and her daughter began talking about her birthday party earlier this fall, she suggested that perhaps Miranda was getting old enough that birthdays no longer had to be about getting lots of gifts. She asked Miranda if she could think of someone that she and her friends might want to help.

4. This is what most parents should do. My daughter raised $ for WWF
and targeted the $ raised towards Right Whales and manatees and my son raised $ for the International Rhino Fund for their birthdays. They also earned $ for A's on their report card and donated to the charity they selected. It was a condition if they wanted a birthday party. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of stuff they will never use. The invitations said instead of a gift, please consider bringing a $5 donation towards ....(whatever charity they chose).
