1. We all need to do that
I would so love to see the headlines after a Black Friday where no one shopped.

Which people will, of course, but maybe if enough of us don't it'll make a big enough dent to be noticed.

7. So do my Mom and her good pal
I may actually be going this year, too.
Me, my Mom, her pal and my good friend (her son) go on a yearly shopping trip to the outlets around the holiday time. Friday may be the only day we are all free to go.
I never shop on Black Friday usually because I don't like the crowds or traffic, and simply because I really don't ever have that much to buy.

i couldn't do the crowds due to my claustrophobia...it is mild, but if i am enclosed with no perceived exit i get real cranky real fast. hope everyone has fun and stays safe and if you happen to save some money on stuff you would have bought anyway...then more power to ya!

afford to go shop for Xmas in this economy anyway. Many don't have jobs, have lost their homes, and are in dire straights. The greedy 1% has sucked up everything. Will they be grateful on T-Day? I doubt it.. they will be planning their Grinchy ways for the holidays.

I am shopping for winter clothing and some other things that go on sale at rock bottom prices. Socks, shoes and boxer shorts for my husband.

Do I want to get out in the crowds? No. But I'll bet I save some massive bucks by doing so. It's not about greed for me.

And buying stuff on sale because you're on a limited budget is just so damn greedy!

And buying gifts for people on Friday instead of on Saturday is just so damn greedy!

This is the only example of greed in this country you could think of to whine about???

29. The point seems to have gone way too far over your head
The greed is from the stores who make you feel just like you do in your thread. On the defensive about why people shovel their money at them when they snap their fingers.

But hey screw principle when you can get a sale.

36. WHAT principle?
That was my point. What is greedy about buying STUFF for people or for yourself? What is greedy about taking advantage of a good sale price? Who the hell is jumping when a store "snaps their fingers"?

Oh like you don't buy STUFF for yourself or as gifts for others and just sit in an empty house out of principle. And you always insist on paying full price when you're offered it on sale on principle. And you just never shop when you feel you need STUFF for yourself or others because you're so deathly afraid of appearing as though you're jumping when a store figuratively "snaps its fingers" so you'll just walk around in wet socks because there's holes in your shoes, wear dirty clothes because the washing machine broke and accept holiday gifts from others without reciprocating on principle. Pfffttt.

Jeez, there just isn't any other example of greed in this country other than bashing people that buy STUFF for themselves and others and take advantage of an offered bargain???

What. The. Fuck.

What about the poor people who need that job and have to work it.

That's part of my point.

The greed has gotten so excessive. First it was 8 am, then 6 am, then 5 am - now MIDNIGHT?!? That's ridiculous!

23. I finished the last of my "shopping" Monday morning
There is one more little thing I need for a gift exchange. If I go anywhere this weekend it will be to a locally owned business to pick something up for that. And that is only because of that movement to shop local instead of at the big stores this weekend.

45. Gift shopping is easy - one family doesn't exchange gifts
The other draws names so we only have to buy one gift. Hubby got his gift last week - an HD TV, refurbished model from NewEgg.com.

The biggest headache were gifts for a group I am in. We each buy one gift (that's the one I still need to buy) and have a gift exchange. One of the members is pregnant so we're having a "baby shower" (my first ever! How I made it to nearly 60 without every attending either a baby or wedding shower I don't know.) in conjunction with our December meeting. We're having the shower, a potluck brunch, gift exchange and cookie exchange.

Well, maybe I should go buy something for the new twin great nephews. A story book or Mother Goose would be perfect. I never, ever under any circumstances give toys. Every niece and nephew had far too many toys so I always gave books.

I started early Christmas shopping before we stopped giving gifts to everyone. I'd go to some of the local arts & crafts events and pick out original stuff that made me think of the people who were to get them. Now I tend to look online - Etsy is a good source. This year I found some things at the seminar I attended in September that were perfect for the niece I drew for gift exchange.

30. You can go a step further and stop doing Christmas entirely
Or, if you have children in the family just do it for them. With a cutoff age. Like the same age they get their driver's license.

I don't have small children and my small family haven't done Christmas in 15 years.

You'd be amazed how liberating it is.

31. Different Strokes,
but I and my family LIKE Christmas. We buy gifts we think the person will like, enjoy giving them and enjoy receiving them. It is possible to do Christmas in a sensible way without either going overboard or getting rid of it compleletly. Christmas is only commercial if people buy into it that way.

The only good thing about being out of work is that you have all the time in the world to run your errands. You can wait for times when its not crowded. (And, you don't have to worry about running into former co-workers who want to know where you are working now...)

Well, I do have to have Thanksgiving dinner at a friend's house, but that's not until 2 p.m.

Lighting a fire for 4 days in the fireplace and watching football and Law and Order and eating leftover turkey samiches ....work and dress slacks and heels and alarm clocks can go to hell. :-)

I cannot even imagine being up and out at midnight on Turkey Day....not even imagine.

48. doing good...
I'm trying to find some time to do the data entry that needs doing since I'm a wicked fast typist! :)

Works been pretty busy lately - yeah, we're hiring - about 5-6 a month - and I'm the HR "department"! I was the EVERYTHING department, but now have 10 in the office to take up my slack. lol...

I had a "small fire" in my house that was supposed to take "two week tops" to fix - I'm on week 9 now I think. Half of everything I own is boxed up packed up and squished into the other half of the house. My youngest just turned 13, just finished football, and we're in the middle of Nutcracker season - so free time I don't have a lot of! I've also been spending what little free time I have lobbying the school board to make sure the continue the dual-language program into highschool like they PROMISED and are now trying to renege on. bleh.

Other than that - I'm just great! :D

How are you doing?

I've recently seen media advertising for a Buy-Local movement asking everyone to make one purchase on Saturday at a local merchant's shop that they would otherwise have made at a big box store.

I've decided that any shopping I do this weekend will be on Saturday and as local as possible.
