Fairfax County Killed A Family Dog. Demand Justice!

Basie the Corgi had only been missing for a few hours when her owners discovered that she had been turned in to the Crosspoint Animal hospital in Fairfax Station. Although she was in good health, with clipped nails and clean fur, by the time her owners found her she'd been euthanized for being a stray.

Basie's owner, Alison, told WUSA9 news, "Basie died alone with strangers, which is the real tragedy. She was a baby, just a helpless little dog, you know?"

The vet who euthanized Basie claims that he was under instruction from the Fairfax Animal Control; Fairfax Animal Control says it gave him no such directions. Regardless of who is at fault, there is only one way to make sure this tragedy never happens again in Fairfax.

Ask Fairfax County to stop euthanizing animals in its shelters!

Aside from spaying/neutering, getting that "chip" is the best thing you can do for your dog.

I had a dog with a chip, who liked to chew on his dog license and rabies tag as well as his ID tag with his name and phone number (rendering it unreadable). He managed to get loose from a fenced yard, ended up on a major highway (to great local drama) and was swooped up by a good samaritan and taken to a shelter. I had him back in hours--why? CHIP.

The shelter got a nice donation from me. I will never NOT chip a dog.

I've read cases about families trying to recover their chipped pets after they're adopted out to other families when the shelters don't check. Sometimes they're SOL.

I think they've standardized the process to the extent that one reader can pick up most if not all of them.

16. But the chip readers always detected a chip, even if they couldn't read it.

Then you'd have to go to that particular police dept and/or shelter to get it read. Regardless, a shelter would know that this was a pet who was cared for, owned, and had a home.

The technology has since evolved (think beta vs VHS in the old days) so that the scanners can recognize both. But they could always detect if an animal had been chipped.

I always do it. I feel kinda bad about the "pinch" they must feel, but I'd rather a moment of pain to being lost forever in a system due to a chewed up tag or lost collar.

A lot of shelters are under budget and understaffed. If they're making these kinds of mistakes, I don't think it's a stretch to suspect that there are times that they aren't even bothering to pick up the scan gun. That's not to say people shouldn't bother to chip. Mine are, for sure. I'm just saying you can't assume a pet wasn't chipped if the shelter screwed up. If this particular shelter made that kind of mistake, there's a chance they may be lax in that area, too.

21. Well, I didn't know so that's why I posed the question. You'd think that a dog

that adorable, who clearly looked cared for, would be checked. It's just stupid of them if they didn't, and in any event, it is pretty clear that steps need to be taken to fix their management/training issues.

I adopted a dog that had already been chipped. My vet was able to read the chip and he said their reader could read it no matter who made the chip.

Something supremely fucked up is going on in that county if they're killing a pet they only had for a few hours and obviously had a good owner.
