I'm back now - and thank you all very much again. (warning - horrible photo attached)
Edited on Sat Nov-19-11 10:59 AM by ThomWV
This is sort of a personal post, a thanks to all those who wished me well and offered up their thoughts and prayers about a week ago when I announced I would be gone for a while because of a medical issue I am having. So really don't expect it to be of much interest to a lot of people and to those who continue to read I want you to understand that as a general statement I'm not the most likable guy you're ever going to run across. Don't get me wrong, I think I'm the nicest guy in the world but there are lots of other folks who think, and maybe deservatively so, pretty much an asshole. I thank them for their thoughts and prayers too.

Now the long version.

I don't believe in prayer at all, but something dam sure worked. I'm not kidding one single bit about this. We walked into a very bad medical situation last week. It was life threatening, immediate, and unavoidable. Learned and experienced experts agreed that the set of procedures I was about to undergo might be the end of me. No one was giving me much better than a 50/50 chance of being alive at the end of the day last monday. The very short version of what I was facing is this. I had developed a tumor growing from the inside of the large vein that returns blood from bottom of the body to the heart. A long section of the vein - which is a little larger in diameter than a typical garden hose - would have to be removed and replaced. A great deal of blood loss was expected during the procedure and preparations for transfusion had been made. The tumor had grown through of the wall of the vein, extended out to engulf my right Kidney and all of its plumbing. From there it grew below and around my stomach but more importantly involving my Pancreas and the ductwork from it and my gallbladder to my intestines. All of this was going to have to be removed and rebuilt.

To do this work we were fortunate to enlist the talents of two of the most capable Surgeons in the country and their staffs. Their skills were going to be tested, and both of them were completely honest about my prospects before we began.

As I said earlier this last act in the program began last friday when we went to the Cleveland Clinic for surgery. As bad luck would have it all of the results of friday's testing were not available by the end of the day. The Surgeons could see that the mass had grown, but the quality of the imagery was not such that they could tell with clarity how much or where. Never the less by this time it was clear to all that the right Kidney would be lost and an extremely difficult second procedure was going to be required. We were braced for that news, we had been expecting it all along; this is what was on our plate as they wheeled me into the room and the universe went dark. The dual-surgery was scheduled for 265 minutes.

Eight hours after the surgery was begun, with all those thoughts and prayers ricocheting around the universe, I was wheeled out of the operating room and into the ICU. A few hours later they moved me to the recovery facilities.

Here is what I can only ascribe to your work on my behalf. When they rolled me into the recovery area I still had both of my kidneys and my entire pancreas. The super-scary procedure to reattach ductwork long ago destroyed proved unnecessary (the second surgical team was dismissed and went on home at the half-way point). The entire tumor was removed, not a speck of it to be found anywhere but in the city-dump on this fine day, and not a single drop of anyone elses blood was required to accomplish all this.

In short not only had everything gone well, in fact virtually every aspect of this operation went far far better than could have possibly been expected, but that entire portions of it became unnecessary and at its conclusion I am (aside from hellacious pain and discomfort) like the flick of a light from on to off, I am "cancer-free". They got it all, it was all cut away. No chemo is planned, no radiation, no nothing. All I have to do is heal up and get on with my life. We'll be watching my gut like a hawk for the next couple of years, but for now regular checkups are all that is in the plan.

My god, I can not thank you all enough.

And now the very very morbid part. I was not much for wanting to the the gory details of the operation but I had never seen a cancer tumor. I had sort of a picture in my mind of what it might look like but I really didn't know. I sort of mentioned this in passing during a conversation with my main doctor and he asked me if I wanted to see pictures after the operation. What? They could do that? "Sure" he said. So he took a dozen or so photos during the operating including a couple of the tumor all by itself just sitting on the table. I am going to post that picture below. If you want to see what a potentially man-killing tumor looks like you've found your page. Its right below. I'm going to put in enough blank spaces that no one should stumble across this by accident - it it a very ugly thing, just looking at it may make you ill, but if you ever wanted to see one here it is:

and, what an incredible story. (The part of needing a nightmare operation and then it turns into a cakewalk. As a software programmer I experience just the opposite (with code that is, not body parts) on about a weekly basis. Ok not that it will kill me but just that it usually doesn't go the way it did for you! :) )

And thank you for the pic. As a Physician Assistant and a practitioner of clinical medicine, I find it fascinating. Out of curiosity, what was the formal diagnosis? Vascular hyperplasia? Dysplasia? Carcinoma in situ? Neoplasm of the inferior vena cava? I'm trying to suss out the diagnosis based on your description.

Get better soon. We all love you, you nice guy, you!... ;-) :grouphug:

57. Wow! Good for you!
I did not see anything about this. As a former ICU Nurse sitting next to my retired Pathologist husband all we can say is wow. You are doing something right my friend.

I am so very happy to see and hear this. Every once in a while you read something like this and are amazed.

Don't forget your little hug pillow when you roll and cough :-) Old habits die hard, could not help myself. But really, use your spirometer (if they still use those) even though it sucks and seems stupid. Medicate your pain before it really hurts.

I hope your recovery gets less painful and difficult rapidly and that you are back to feeling normal soon. That is one hell of a tumor. You should take it home and name it. Maybe put it in a large, strong container with formaldehyde so you can shoot nerf balls at it. I have heard of crazier things but hey, you made it and carried it why not keep it ;)

Anyway, I am so happy you are done with that and on the way to better health. Very good news this morning.

hoping. Man that's an ugly tumor! (And I used to work in the OR for 10 years)! You must have a type of non-metastatic cancer. That's what I had removed 4 1/2 years ago, no chemo, no radiation. March is my 5 year final CA check-up and I'll continue to send you good vibes until you hit your 5 year CA free milestone too!

Take care!

As for the picture, it really isn't that bad. However, my son has had 5 debulkings for his plexi tumor and I asked to see what they look like sooo I guess I am weird. Anyway, wishing you continued success in your recovery.

A quick "YAY" and out of this thread, skipped the photo. My aunt's been asking how you are. She was praying for you.

I'm not religious but prayer is something else.

It's like the last time I saw my best friend from junior high, after 35 years of correspondence and occasional visits. I just knew I would never see her again. And when she got hit by a car running a red light 4 years later, well..........I was not even surprised because I knew.

Glad your situation went the other way. Welcome back.

I've always liked what Robert Heinlein said about prayer (include vibes and good thoughts): Can't hurt, might help. Who knows, but knowing people have your back has got to help.

Tumors in that area of the body are very difficult to discover. I found this out a few years ago when it was discovered my aunt had a tumor on her kidney. She was given a low chance to make it through and if it was cancerous even lower. When they went to remove the tumor it was the size of a pineapple. She was lucky like you are that it hadn't spread, no chemo or anything, just heal up and continue living.

Congrats that it turned out well for you. I wish you the best.

And thanks for the photo too.

128. Wonderful news, Thom! Wonderful!!
Thank you so much for sharing with us.

YOU deserve the credit. You reached out, you gathered strength, you fought.

Yeah, we're here for you, and we care, and we were pulling for you. And it's always amazing when this happens. There is no explanation about why you got a miracle, just the fact that you did and I'm so glad.

Take it easy. Keep an eye on things in there. The rest of your life from now on is a gift from the universe. What you do with it is your gift back to the universe.

appreciatively,
Bright

142. Thom, thank you. I'm so happy you were saved for US!
Doctors deserve their pay. They've worked long hard hours to attain those life saving skills. Our country needs to better subsidise their educations.

We need single payer and preventative care.

What were your first indications that something was wrong in your body?

What a horrid looking tumor - I can't believe you survived it, but I am glad you did!

Wishing you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving together!

236. I'm very happy that the operation was a success...
and you came through the operation with flying colors. One thing about post op recovery - try to get up and move around as soon as you are able to, as that will speed recovery. My hubby had major surgery to remove part of his colon about 4 years ago and very soon after, he was walking the halls. He also didn't overdo on pain meds and that also helped to speed up recovery. I wish you all the best as you recuperate from this ordeal.
