PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Supreme Court on Thursday overturned Gov. Jan Brewer's politically charged removal of the chairwoman of the state redistricting commission and ordered reinstatement of the official.
The court said Brewer failed to demonstrate that Colleen Mathis engaged in conduct that gave the Republican governor constitutional grounds for removal.
The decision marks a defeat for Brewer and brings more turmoil to a process that has been bogged down in legal challenges as the commission has worked to draw new congressional and legislative maps that will be used for the next decade in Arizona.
It was not immediately clear what will happen next now that the court has ordered Mathis reinstated.
Mathis did not immediately return calls for comment, while the commission's staff it would contact the five commissioners to see what they want to do next.
