PETA up to their old tricks again
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 09:07 PM by Renew Deal
"PETA Targets Turkey, Texas; Asks Town To Change Name To 'Tofurky'"

Welcome to Tofurky, Texas?

As Thanksgiving approaches, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has asked the mayor of Turkey, Texas to change the name of his town to "Tofurky," a vegan turkey alternative.

I wonder if PETA was paid for this promotional stunt.

1. PETA should be ignored
For the sake of Vegetarianism and Veganism, they just draw bad press...

3. Tofurkey is good. Makes me want to become a Vegetarian. PETA, however, does not.

often they are "out there" but sometimes you have to be radical and outrageous to accomplish your goals.

11. Me too....
When people really understand how good for you it is to eat vegetarian, even vegan, we will have a huge cultural change.

You can intellectualize these things, but when you are sick, and then, you are NOT (because of diet), that is a visceral learning experience.

It's one thing for stuff to be bad for you, but the fabulous way you feel eating healthy,

is a serious deal breaker with bacon.

22. I am a PETA supporter and sometimes donor.
But at times, they do go over the top, such as trying to get a town to change its name.

24. I also support PETA. They have done many undercover investigations that revealed
horrible animal abuse.

their antics in the media are just publicity stunts and don't really bother me. when you look at what they have accomplished it is worthy of praise.

here in Vermont they helped shut down a slaughter house where animals were literally being tortured.

4. Why would they have been paid?
They do this sort of thing all the time. This is either the 3rd or 4th city/town/whatever they've asked to change their name because it's somehow animal-related.

1. Get everyone talking about you.
2. ??
3. Profit!

If they could just fill in Step 2, they'd be the richest organization on the planet...

7. I don't see the harm in this, it's clever
and gets some publicity for a "trick" that's kind of cute instead of some of the far out negative stuff they often do. Of course those who hate PETA will never give credit no matter what. x(

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: You have to admit, it's pretty funny and quite clever. :)

I like that they stand up for all animals... Sometimes they're bizarre, but they always stand up for innocent animals. Gotta give 'em credit.

13. PETA? Doesn't that stand for "People Eating Tasty Animals?"
Good thing I'm wearing my flame retardant PJs!!! And I'd like to thank the little furry ones who helped make my flame retardant PJs possible.

:hide:

On the more serious side, I think PETA does some positive things ... but when they do things like this ... they make themselves the butt of extremely easy mockery, which is what I was doing above.

They need to focus.

26. You skippped (missed?) the actual point at the end of my post ... *sigh* ...
Yes, I used a very predictable response ... in my subject line.

My POINT was that PETA, while they often do good things, often seems to go out of their way to do totally ridiculous things (like this) which seem to be intended to invite mockery.

And I think when they do so, it ends up detracting from, and marginalizing, the good things they actually do.

And your *sigh*, reinforced my point. So thanks.

BTW ... My wife and I actually donate to PETA.

And as I said in my prior post, they need to focus.

30. Do you think I am actually concerned about what you believe?
This may seem crazy to you, but a person (or a couple) can actually donate to a group with whom they don't always agree 100%.

I find that there is almost no group that I support 100%. Peta included.

And so since you went down this path ... here is one of the things I've learned on DU.

I used to think that only the far right wing crazies saw the world as simply black and white, no nuance, no complexity. Their support, or non-support, is total. All encompassing.

But as your response demonstrates, the inability to engage and discuss nuance and complexity can also escape some on the left.

You seem to be confused that some one could both support an organization, and yet be critical of some of its actions.
