L.A. Parents Outraged That HBO Entourage Actress Reads To First Grade Children
Edited on Wed Nov-16-11 02:27 PM by NeedleCast
Oh America, you amuse me so.

Actress Sasha Grey has outraged some parents in LA after she was allowed to read to first grade children as part of a Guest Reading Program at a Compton Elementary School. Sasha Grey has appeared in HBO's hit series, Entourage, and will be appearing in several upcoming Hollywood movies.

Sasha Grey is also an award winning porn actress (although she hasn't done porn in two years).

1. Why not make her wear a giant "P" for "Porn Star" on her chest so children can avoid her forever? nt

20. Why wouldn't they?
She's very famous.

I suppose the 'logic' here is supposed to go like this: They don't want an ex-porn star and current pro-porn crusader (not Entourage actress, she was on a few episodes FFS) reading to their child... therefore they shouldn't know anything about porn.

Interesting thought process there.

4. Hey now what the fuck is this?
I just learned yesterday that if you go into porn you have ruined your life and will become nothing. Nobody will ever hire you for anything and you are marked for life.

What is this shit? She should be living on the street right? :hide:

5. Check Out The Video On The HuffPo Link
Even people who support her for reading to children often make back-handed remarks. The second person they quote is the best. The person quoted basically says "We shouldn't hold it against Sasha that she made some mistakes in her late teens and early 20s." The assumption that Sasha viewed working in porn as a mistake is so typical.

6. Would that support vanish if she stated she was proud of her porn work?
I bet it would. As far as I can see, she didn't claim it was a youthful indiscretion or mistake; thus, the support from these people is perhaps misplaced, in that if that is part of her experience, then that should be considered along with every other factor.

17. Why would it not be typical to assume it's viewed as a mistake?
Are you aware of any research which supports your apparent assumption that most of them are happy and proud they were involved in that business?

22. Because It's a Typical American Reaction To Porn/Sex
I did not suggest most of them are happy and/or proud of being involved in porn. Try again.

What I suggested was that it is typical of a society that is bound up in Victorian era attitudes towards sex to assume that anyone who has worked as a porn star, stripper, escort, et. al. "made a youthful mistake." My sister was a stripper for two years. She made a shit ton of money, and used said money to pay for her undergrad at Baylor University, then her Masters at the University of Texas. Now she works in human resources at an insurance company and is happily married to a great guy, has a two year old son and is expecting her second.

Why would anyone be outraged that a former porn star is reading to children? There's no reason to be. No implication that she's going to stop reading and act out a few scenes in front of the kids. Only the reaction of people who think that because Sasha Grey was a porn star, she is no longer eligible to participate in society.

23. You're getting the order wrong there.
People assume that an ex-porn star would consider it a mistake because there is a far more widespread assumption that most ex-porn stars would consider it a mistake. Prove that wrong and spread that around and people will someday stop making that assumption

As for now, the most visible ex-porn stars are the ones crusading *against* it, not for it (as Ms. Grey does).

As for why they'd be outraged, perhaps because people like to think there are some kind of standards being used in deciding who gets to have access to their children. Not that I think an ex-porn star and current pro-porn crusader like Ms Grey would do anything bad... but it doesn't matter what I think. Parents like to have some idea of what's going on and finding out someone with her kind of background was allowed to visit the school takes away their feeling of being able to rely on what they consider the good judgment of the people deciding who gets to visit their children.

As for your hyperbolic statement about anyone thinking that 'she is no longer eligible to participate in society'... GMAFB.

25. No, You've Just Chosen To Shift The Topic
Not unexpected.

This is Mick Foley: http://pickledthink.blogspot.com/2011/05/i-love-mick-foley.html

Scroll down the the 2nd picture. That's Mick Foley, ex-World Wrestling Federation Super Star, covered in blood. Known for taking (fake) wrestling to the extreme. Some of the incarnations of his wrestling "character" were Cactus Jack - a brute who like to smash people with a barbed wire covered club. There was also Mankind, who used to wear a sock puppet on his hand with which he'd apply the mandible claw, a move that was basically Mick shoving his sweat sock covered hand into an opponent's mouth.

Mick Foley is also a best selling writer of children's books and did book tours reading to children.

Why do you think it's bad judgement for the school to allow an ex-porn star to read to children? Isn't the reading to the children what we should focus on? The point is that the field someone is involved in isn't necessarily a reflection of their character.

You sound very much like the person the video in the HuffPo article quotes, who essentially said that Sasha could participate in a wide variety of charities like animal shelters, but should "expect flak" for volunteering to read to children.

If they prefer Condi Rice so be it. If they prefer a Mormon, or a Scientologist... it makes no difference to me.

You are trying to make this about my tastes, and it is not. I'm simply explaining why the parents are unhappy... did you ever stop to think that perhaps it might also be due to the fact that the school used her real name, apparently to deceive them?

28. The School May Not Have Been Aware
Apparently Grey was recruited to read to the kids through an agency that listed Sasha Grey as an actress who worked on Entourage, a totally factual statement. As far as I know, Sasha Grey is both her real name she used in her porn career. According to Wiki, that's the name she worked under, so I'm not sure why you're accusing the school of being deceptive in using her real name.

I understand why the parents who are outraged are unhappy. It is because they are bigots.

Nay. Care to guess how many posts you made in that whopper of a 900+ post porn thread over the last few days? And I'm the one on a high horse?

just illustrating the hypocrisy of American culture when it comes to sex. Sasha Grey is good enough to fap to, but not good enough to read to our children.

Edited on Wed Nov-16-11 04:24 PM by redqueen
The attitude displayed by a few people on both sides is high-horsey. Your comment about them being bigots qualifies you in this thread, IMO. Unless you ask them you have no idea if it's because they're bigots or because they don't like being misled about who has access to their children.

Somehow I doubt all the parents who objected to this thinks Ms. Grey is "good enough to fap to"... but there we have another example of someone projecting his thoughts onto everyone else. YOU think she is, so everyone else must, too.

36. They Are Bigots
They are prejudging someone based on a background that has nothing to do with the topic at hand (reading to children in elementary school). As I said, nothing in the three or four articles that I read, including the article and video on HuffPo, indicate anyone was misled. Sasha Grey was billed as an actress working on the popular show Entourage. That's a statement of fact. I work as a technical trainer. While I no longer list my several years in the restaurant industry or my teenage years as a pizza delivery driver on my resume, I would also not expect someone in the financial industry - where I work on the regulatory side - to say "holy shit, this guy used to be a pizza delivery driver, how is he qualified to teach me how to use complicated mortgage software?" If they did, I would consider that person a bigot.

So you're telling me that you think the parents who are outraged here are outraged because the school misled them (a statement which you seem to have created...I see no evidence of the school misleading parents), not because they had a porn star reading books to kids in a classroom? If you have some evidence of the school misleading the parents, or the talent agency misleading the school, feel free to link me to it.

8. Yes, that's very logical.
Your strawman of absolutes and extremes makes for a very convincing argument.

She's the exception that proves the rule.

What you *should* have learned yesterday is that many porn stars do end up damaged for life, both physically and psychologically. But I'm sure you didn't bother reading about any of that.

Edited on Wed Nov-16-11 07:23 PM by Initech
He was talking about the Justice Sunday event in Kentucky a few years ago Zell Miller said:

"Isn't it strange how the government puts no smoking signs on gas stations to remind us of that danger but doesn't think we need to be reminded of the dangers of living a sinful life???"

And Jon Stewart replies:

"Uh yeah I think it's the way it should be - no fires in gas stations, no preaching in the town square. The government should keep us from being engulfed in flames on earth and that's pretty much it."
