If every member bought a star, it would be 7.5 million dollars
That's based on 177,367 registered members.

Even if only a 1/4 of the members sign up, that's a nice piece of coin.

I understand that.

2. Many of those members are no longer active
Take a run through the "directory" and you'll see quite a few folks who signed up and then went elsewhere.

It would be interesting to know how many active posters this site has but I don't think that's the kind of information that would be considered shareable.

7. That's because there's no way to "deregister" on this place
Or at least I think there is no way. And there absolutely should be. My guess is that this site charges advertisers based on the number of registered users (or some such calculus). When 3/4 of them are no longer even here, how does that stack up.

Look, I figure that if just 10% of the registered users pay this new membership fee, that's 3/4 of a million dollars. Advertising revenue has to provide much more. That's a lot of bazookas. I'm not sure I feel like contributing more when I don't know where it's going.

17. Advertising charges are usually based on the number of hits/clicks per given time period.
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 12:42 PM by CJCRANE
I would guess that the number of registered users isn't that relevant.

On edit: a large number of registered users is more useful for email affiliate advertising/marketing but DU doesn't do that at the moment.

16. You must have a star to do that
No star equals no query.

I have a star now but come 1st quarter, I won't.

11. No, not really. Every drive ends up with more than 1000.
I think there are more like 3-4000 active users of DU. Just a guess, though, based on the number of views on some posts.

25. Donations. Over 1000 donations.
That indicates that there are over 1000 active members who take the time to donate in a single drive. Since donations are good for a year, a lot of people don't donate in every drive, although many do. I try to donate each time there's a drive. I've missed a couple.

What that means is that there are certainly more than 1000 active DUers.

27. Okay. What's 1000 x $42? 1,500 x $42?
Assuming full membership participation (which is probably unrealistic)

That's barely enough to even cover a couple of salaries, right?

Doesn't make any sense. I'm not for or against it, just trying to figure it out.

13. Pretty close, I asked-the-admins a while back...
Could you run a database query
And find the total number of users who made at least 1 post in the last 60 days?

That is something we could do.
My guess is that it's somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 unique users.

There are a lot of people who signed up on DU who never post or maybe even visit. A lot.

18. How much is this website worth?
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 12:52 PM by JohnnyRingo
Really, here's a calculator for determining what a site is worth:

http://stimator.com/

Easy to compare different sites. Interesting that Free Republic is valued at $68.
On edit: The new policy will make DU more valuable, thus more marketable if anyone wanted to sell. Just sayin'.

21. JimRob has admitted that the site is in trouble.
I read one of his rants this summer where he complained that no one was donating and the site is near bankruptcy. He threatened to chuck the whole thing and retire to Florida where he recently bought property. This led many to accuse him of skimming every possible penny without upgrading the website.

I believe that's true. Although he's nearly at Social Security age, we all know he won't take that filthy socialist lucre and needs every dime to retire (LOL). We now know he can sell the site to any Freeper with pocket change and use it to buy his bus ticket.
