Gergen: Bill Maher's "Assassin's Lobby" remark deeply offensive
Yep, he said it on the weekend of the Tucson killings.

"For Bill Maher To Call The NRA The Assassin's Lobby Is Deeply Offensive To A Whole Lot Of People"

3. I tend to agree.
I'm not a member of the nra, and haven't been for 20 years...However...

One can disagree with the nra's politics, even disagree with their defense of the second amendment, but they do represent 4 million plus Americans.

They support background checks at retail, on gun purchases.

They support restrictions on mentally ill and violent felons from possessing firearms.

They helped after VT, to strengthen mental health reporting to the NICS database (thats the database that is checked when one purchases a gun at retail.)

Seems to me that those are things an "assassins lobby" would not support.

I'm a second amendment supporter, and comments like this only serve to strengthen my resolve, and tend to cause me to lean towards becoming an nra member again. Or at the very least, to donate money to them.

I doubt very much I'm remotely alone in that.

4. I can see how that might be offensive.
Edited on Wed Jan-19-11 01:54 AM by pa28
He also thought that "malfeasance" from the left was stirring up hostility rather than hate talk from the right. I thought that was offensive.

He also thought that Obama's presentation and execution of a war in Iran would rescue his Presidency and the economy. I thought that was the very definition of the "malfeasance".

I can see how someone might think David Gergen has lost all credibility. Gergen is a prime example of a former power player who has strayed so far he's about to be retired from the ranks of "the very serious people".

Goodbye David. You've hit your expiration date.

5. I'm surprised Gergen was able to figure that out, he's usually so wrong about everything.
It was offensive, it was meant to be offensive.

7. "Deeply offensive"?
He must be really in love with the NRA. I'm all for the right to own guns, but the NRA is a bunch of fucking yahoos with way too much influence in the government.

Maher is just a comedian and political pundit. Enough with the pearl clutching already, Gergen. Go blow off few rounds and try to bear up under the strain. :eyes:

You are safe. Don't worry. Maher knows his audience. A bunch of peaceniks who hesitate to kill a fly. That's who watches Bill Maher.

16. Does Anyone Care?
This is an issue that there's no middle ground. Few minds were changed over the Tucson shootings and only entrenched opinions...as is usually the case. Even more important is who cares what Gergen or any of the pundits have to say. Their projection is purely based on what they hear at their drinkie drinkie parties and playing telephone with their friends. Their view of the rest of the country is a cartoon view based on polls and talking points not on reality.

Bill also got paid for that one half hour about what you make in a year, Dave. If you are lucky. Now you can be doubly offended. You should have been a comic, Dave. Being offensive to the likes of you is a high dollar gig.

Is how I feel about it.
They recently sent me some bullshit and made a mistake and included a toll free number so I called and told them exactly how I feel about them and requested no more correspondence from them. I did basically the same thing 30 some odd years ago and didn't hear from them until this time here. Hopefully they take the hint.
