the public good will take care of its own needs.

I see this occurring with the public support that Assange is getting. We're just tired of all the social duality and the hypocrisy because it has been affecting our health, safety and welfare. The government can keep shaving back its definition of what qualifies as health, safety and welfare, but it does so at its own risk.

1. Just take a look at what's happening in England right now. Protesters
shut down an electronics store because it didn't pay its 6 billion-pound tax share, while social programs are being cut.

This revolt could happen in the US, except our country is more divided & our media either isn't as forthcoming or provides disinformation.

2. Britain is a more compact country.
It would be difficult to organize those kinds of protests here. The only way that Assange will hurt the banks (for example) is that the victims that keep losing their money to them will go elsewhere. Also, it will be more difficult for top managers to reap in big bonuses, which might make them less willing to take unnecessary or corrupt risks. (And by the latter, I'm suggesting that banks have clients in high places.)
