Zuccotti Park neighbors furious at OWS
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/occupy_wall_street/2011/10/21/2011-10-21_neighbors_not_protesters.html

Full article at link:

Occupy Wall Streeters got an earful Thursday night from lower Manhattan residents fed up with the revolutionary racket and having their doorsteps used as toilets.

Protesters and homeowners on the perimeter of Zuccotti Park squared off at the raucous meeting of Community Board 1's Financial District and quality of life committees.

"I can't take the noise and garbage," Financial District resident Laura Fernandez said.

The crowd of about 200 seemed evenly divided between lower Manhattan residents demanding an end game to the demonstrations and protesters vowing to fight for as long as it takes for Wall Street greed to end.

"They are defecating on our doorsteps," griped Katherine Hughes, a mom who lives a block from Zuccotti Park.

exclusive gated communities they love so much.

5. Seriously that isn't a fair comment
I am 100% supportive of OWS but being disrespectful to the residents that live in the neighborhood just make our movement look bad. Not everyone in that area is associated with Wall Street so to suggest they move is pretty damn rude.

Mind you I wouldn't be shocked if the people doing that are those trying to sabotage OWS. I remember being there a few weeks ago on a Sunday night and the OWS general assembly at the WS location passed a rule that said quiet hours started at 10pm at night because they wanted to be respectful to the neighbors. I got the impression that the folks who normally camp at the park are pretty mindful of the neighbors and cleaning up after themselves.

10. Sure it's fair
They've been living a few blocks from the biggest stink in the world, Wall Street, without complaint for years. That's got to be some real expensive RE down there, I'm sure they're mostly part of the 1%.

Too bad, so sad.

16. Really, that is just an embarassing assumption
I'm not talking about the businesses down there I'm talking the people. And to make assumptions like you have made is reasons why OWS gets a black eye.

Perhaps we should consider WHO is really doing this since I doubt it is OWS. An article in a right-wing rag attacking OWS as serial crappers. My guess is they wrote the article to try and make the OWS look bad.

Read past the headline instead of making bad assumptions!

Nobody making $350,000 a year, or with millions in the bank, is going to call an apartment in the NY financial district "home". Anyone making that kind of money can affort to live somewhere a bit nicer...and would probably have a doorman to chase away the stoop poopers.

Census data puts the average household incomes in that area between $100k and $150k a year. Poor? Not even close. Part of the 1%? Not even close. That's a solidly upper middle class neighborhood in Manhattan, but those aren't the multi-millionaires and billionaires that the OWS people are fighting against.

And how in the world did you get that I'm "defending" stoop pooping on the 99%? I think that stoop poopers should get their asses tossed in a cell no matter WHO the house belongs to.

Mind you, I suspect that it's probably not the main occupants of the OWS doing this but those trying to sabotage it. But if we are the 99% then there is a good chance the residents in that neighborhood are part of the 99% too.

11. I have to agree. Can this woman prove that someone from OWS left the 'gift' on her doorstep?
And when I was visiting OWS, they were in general assembly and they passed a rule that said no noise after 10pm. When 10pm came and went the drums were silented and the chanters all got ready for bed.

But to be fair - these people are using the bathroom somewhere. I have a sensitive nose and I couldn't smell anything offensive there. My assumption is they have arrangements for a place to go in that area and to take showers.

9. You have to wonder if it's OWS doing the crapping or sabotagers?
There's alot of assumptions not only in the article but even by DUers who are replying to the post.

The right wants to do everything to make OWS look bad so I wouldn't be shocked if the crapping is done by a bunch of Jamie O'Keefe wannabes trying to make OWS look bad.

And to assume that those living in the area are a bunch of wealthy 1%ers is just shameful for ANY DUers.

23. As A Resident Of The City I Can Tell You
Noise is one of the biggest problems Nyers face. It’s hard to get a moment of peace and quiet and after a month I can well imagine that the residents are up on arms. And, hygiene is a problem, especially with that number of people involved. It does no good bad mouthing the residents for valid complaints.

Now the OWSers recognize the problems and have started to take steps. First they have moved the drummers who were playing all night long to Union Square. which is much less residential. What they need to do next is address sanitation. They have at least half a mil in the bank…they should get porta-potties in. I bet they could even get a deal.

46. I've Wondered About That Too
But surely that would be in the best interest of everyone and could be negotiated. Also, the teamsters, who are said to be supporting them, could maybe help them organize this. For films they have 'honey wagons', which are like a truck with a number of attached porta potties. And if it was a homeless man who is the culprit, which I suspect it was, then they would be helping out the homeless who have no place to go unless they have money to buy something at a fast food, starbucks or restaurant.

East Village Man Won't Stop Defecating on Doorsteps
http://newyork.nearsay.com/nyc/east-village-les/st-marks-homeless-man-defecating-doorsteps

I have been living in New York City for 25 years and for the first time, I have a problem that seems to be hard to solve. I live on St. Mark's Place, between 2nd and 3rd Streets and for the past six weeks I’ve had a homeless man shit on the front door of my building. I called 311 and 911 and neither wants to deal with this. I get it too, there are a lot bigger issues going on. However, this subhuman of a homeless man has created a quality of life issue for both me and my neighbors.

It’s not fun starting your day off when you walk out of your building to greet the world and it kicks off with the stench and a literal pile of shit, along with flies. The first I have caught the Doorshitter in action I was nice to him. I told him he must stop and if he doesn’t I will take action, but the Mad Crapper has continued his shitty assault on my door.

more at link...

---------------------------------

and from my personal experience. While working the last NYC Marathon, we had tons of "gift bags" left over at the end of the race. I took a bunch to give to homeless folks (since they contained fruits and healthbars). One two different occasions, on the way back to Penn, I approached a homeless guy only to be greeted by his rear end as he sat to pop a squat. Finally, I gave the bags to a homeless guy in Penn.

So this story is BS. I can say with all certainty that it's NOT the OWS folks.
