Posting Pictures on DU
I have asked this question before, but I am still having trouble accomplishing the task. Can anyone help me figure out how to post a picture in a post at DU.

I have tried right clicking on the picture. When I do that, most of the time, the only things that come up are options to copy the url address for the picture. On one occasion I right clicked and the option to copy the image came up, but when I tried to post the image at DU I was unable to post the image. What should I do?

1. It sounds like you are doing everything exactly correct.
When you preview the post, what does it say in place of the picture?

You may also want to use a free hosting site such as Photobucket. Once a picture is uploaded, they will have several options for loading a picture on other sites, such as DU.

3. After you right click, copy the URL (not the image itself) and paste that in your post
Once you post that, DU will process the URL by showing the actual image.

5. Right click on the picture
and select "Copy Image Location"

Then paste that into the body of your post. The pasted text should end in ".jpg" or ".png"

6. Here's what you need to do
You need to upload the picture to Photobucket or a similar kind of photo sharing website. Keep the pixel size around 800 pixels wide.

Then when you want to put it on DU, keep both the DU Thread and Photobucket pages open. Click on the picture you want to put on DU. A menu will drop down below the picture. Click on "Direct Link" I do a Ctrl V on my PC (sorry, dont know what the commands are on a MAC.) to copy the picture. Then go to the DU thread and do a Ctrl V to copy in the message.

7. Photobucket
Open up a Photobucket account and copy the picture to that account. One of the options is a direct link. I've never had a problem with any picture.

14. Professional Product
If you groom animals for a living, you do not want to get bitten. This muzzle appears to slip on easily and does not appear to cause the animal any discomfort.

For persons who care about cats.

8. Open a free account in Photobucket
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 06:05 PM by lunatica
http://photobucket.com/

Download any photo from the web by dragging it to your desktop

Go to Photobucket and upload the photo from your desktop through the Photobucket site.

You can create files so you can put similar photos together (like a file for gifs, for lolcats, etc.)

do a mouseover on the photo you want to post on DU

Chose the Direct Link option which will automatically be copied.

Paste into your op and then look at preview.

Then click on Update message

Voila!

13. An image must be on a web server in order for it to show up on this message board
When you copy the image URL, you are copying its web address. When you simply copy the image, that image gets temporarily stored in your computer memory, where you can do stuff like open Paint and click "Paste" and the software then pastes the image into the Paint window. Copying the image address allows you to paste it into this message board because that image exists on a web server.

However, posting an image taken from another's website is called hotlinking and is not normally considered proper internet etiquette because you are posting that image at the expense of the site owner's bandwidth. DU is a fairly busy website and, depending on the popularity of your thread, an image posted can sometimes result in thousands of computers downloading it.

I pay for web hosting and normally, when I post an image, it is one I have uploaded to my pay-hosted server.

This does not mean I am completely free of hotlinking. If I find an image from Wikipedia, TwitPic, Facebook, DayLife, a Major Network or one of the numerous free image-hosting services, I will post the image URL(s) relatively guilt-free.

As has been suggested in this thread, if you want to post images, open an account at an image-hosting provider, upload pics you've saved to your hard drive and then you can copy/paste those image URLs with a clear conscience.

18. "Hotlinking", was aginst DU rules not that long ago...

Copyright issues and Bandwidth Theft

Do not steal someone else's bandwidth by posting images that are hosted on another website. Democratic Underground is a high-traffic website, so posting images from other sites will cause their server load to increase dramatically, and might even cost the website owner money. If you wish to post an image from another website, you must contact the owner of the other website to get their consent.

Why that was changed... I have no idea.

Myself... I never do it because of bandwidth theft issues, but also because of the possibility of having the pic swapped out and replaced with something highly embarrassing (I can attest that I've done it when others have hotlinked to a pic or two of mine :) ).
