THEY ARE STILL SOLD!!! How can they remove a currently sold item from the dictionary!!!!

‘Cassette tape’ kicked out of ‘Oxford English Dictionary’ edition

Wordsmiths over at the Oxford English Dictionary say “cassette tape” has been removed from the pages of its Concise edition to make room for words such as retweet and cyberbullying, USA Today reported earlier this month. (Note: The word will remain in the unabridged version.)

------------

the article goes on to list "items your kids may never know" including a car window crank I still crank my damn car window!!

10. I still use them to tape classical music now and then.
I have a big collection of classical performances on cassette tapes and these are available practically nowhere else so, of course, I hang onto them.

15. Impressive actually.
I heard an NPR report about a sub-culture use of cassettes. Here's a reference to cassette-based record labels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassette_culture#21st_century

My favorite label names from that list are: Already Dead Tapes, Obsolete Audio Formats, Roaches Watch TV, and Tapeworm. :D

4. One of the comments made a good point, "Dictionary" is an antique word too.
At least bound, paper versions are.

I haven't used one since the early 90's

24. No radio, but yes...AC (gotta have AC in Illinois).
He put a radio in it himself which plays his iPod). It didn't come with one. He also had to use a key to lock and unlock the doors (he put a security system in it so he can now lock with a fob). NOTHING electrical in the car (other than the mechanical stuff..wipers, heater, AC, defrost). Manual seats, windows and locks were all the car had. Bottom of the line...except AC. :)

8. A few years ago my daughter asked what an
Astronaut is. I suggested she look it up in one of our dictionaries. When she said it wasn't in there I jokingly told her to give me the dictionary. Sure enough it wasn't there, then I saw the dictionary was published in 1958. I like to collect old dictionaries.

19. I watched the slide show at the link and I have most of the items today.
Why are answering machines on the list? What do people use now--voice mail from your phone/cell company? I think the machine is much more convenient as you don't have to make a phone call to get your messages. I also have car window cranks in my car.

And I'm curious about cassette tapes: I used to do a lot of interviews when writing for a magazine and I would tape them. What do journalists use now when they're doing a long interview? Don't they use cassettes anymore?

22. So if I wanted to inteview again, I'd have to buy a different recorder?
I've never seen a digital recorder. (Yeah, I'm old.) Are they more expensive? I used a transcription machine when I transcribed the tapes. How would I transcribe from this type of recorder?

31. My cell phone has a voice recorder built in that has nearly unlimited capacity..
And it's far from a new model, so far in fact that I don't even have cell service for it any more, now I just use it as an alarm clock and to play MP3s on.. It's quite a good recorder in fact, I could easily record an interview on it.

As for transcription, you'd just transfer the file with the interview to your PC (should only take moments) and listen to it on that using something like this setup..

21. I still have about 300 cassettes.
And, I just recently had to replace my electric metronome by buying one off of eBay since they stopped making them about 15 years ago. :(

No doubt about it, I'm freaking old.

Yeah. So what?

They still know what "roll down your window" and "don't touch that dial" mean, even though they may never have actually done either one.
