Lenovo passes Dell in 'disappointing' PC market
Lenovo passed Dell to become the second-largest worldwide PC vendor behind Hewlett-Packard in the third 2011 quarter, pushing back rival Dell.

Global PC shipments hit a total of 91.8 million units in the third quarter of 2011, up 3.2% from the same period last year, according to figures compiled by Gartner. The researcher earlier this year had predicted that shipments will increase 5.1% in the period.

Acer Group grabbed the fourth position, while Asus rounded out the top five PC makers.

But they are mostly not made in the US, no matter what name is on the box. Volume is now over 360 million / year.

2. Well, Lenovo is simply a Chinese company.
They're no more American than Toyota.

HP is an American company, but at this point most of their computers are Chinese built.

Dell, for all their faults, is really the last large American computer company that builds most of its equipment in the U.S. They do have facilities overseas, and they have their own outsourcing programs, but most of the Dell desktop computers for sale in the U.S. are still built here. It's one of the few reasons that I still buy from them.

4. True
But they still have to build Thinkpads according to IBM specs. Thinkpads rule.

5. Dell servers are the only thing they make in the US
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell#Manufacturing

They always sourced notebooks from abroad, and have closed most of their US desktop manufacturing. They may still make some desktops at the Alienware facility in Florida.

8. So much for that.
I didn't realize that they'd closed both American plants in the past few years.

Time to start looking for some alternatives.

9. Even a "white box" assembled by a local shop would be mostly Asian parts
There might be some US made mechanical bits, connectors, etc. But the motherboard, memory, disk drive, etc. are most likely from Asia. The processor and graphic chip might come originally from a US plant, but the wafers would likely have gone to asia to be cut into dies, packaged and tested.

3. Well, I'll stick with my Mac. Don't like PCs anyway.
I have owned many and they all had problems. My Mac Mini has a few glitches but nothing that restart won't solve.
