Help please I need a job!!
Edited on Fri Sep-23-11 09:52 AM by LadyInAZ
I am not seeking to fund raise. Just hoping I can get help finding a job fast. I'm an experienced IT programmer (for 15 years) living in Phoenix, AZ. I've done EVERYTHING to finding a job and now DESPERATE.

Unemployed for OVER 2 years, savings all GONE, and unemployment benefits completely EXHAUSTED. Living with family and barely making ends met. I've applied to jobs in and outside of my career, in and outside of city/state/country....

NOTHING has come of it... just over qualified and jobless for more then 2 years...... Anyone know of their company's IT department that is hiring? Anyone has advice on making extra money that does not cost? Any and all help/advise is appreciated.

BTW - also willing to relocate with company assistance.

Thanks!
Desperate in Arizona

1. are you stuck to Arizona?
while my company is not specifically hiring, there are many companies that are struggling to find competent IT folks...and some pay pretty well.

2. Sorry to hear this.
The one thing that I will point out is that very few companies offer relocation assistance these days--they don't have to because there are hundreds of people that are willing to take the job without it.

So, basically I would leave that out of your requirements.

Good luck.

4. I know a ton on the east coast that are. What languages do you know?
PM me if you want some particulars; there's a constant shortage of Perl and ColdFusion programmers in DC.

13. You can't throw a rock in DC/Virginia without hitting an Oracle job opening
Some require you to be able to get a security clearance, though. Seriously, DC is the only city in the country with more job openings than unemployed people (by a factor of 3, in fact); if you're up for moving and have IT skills I think you'd have a good shot here. There's the government, contractors, and non-profits galore. The contractors generally have better pay but less job security; if you land a job with a think-tank or trade association you don't have to worry about layoffs but you also won't be making six figures (it's a trade I consider well worth it). You can still get jobs off of Craigstlist here (that's how I got this one), that's how hard people are looking for developers.

The government still uses an absurd amount of ColdFusion and has some really, really old database systems that need constant work. .NET is making some inroads, and a lot of the think tank world is switching to Rails. Be flexible and don't limit yourself to what you've done already; particularly with the smaller non-profits as long as you're willing and able to pick things up quickly you'll find a lot of flexibility on their part too (and, yes, you'll probably end up being who people go to when they can't print, etc.)

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/search/jjj?query=oracle&srchType=A
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/search/jjj?query=SQL&srchType=A
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/search/jjj?query=PL/SQL&srchType=A

Finally, Google for "national association of" and just start clicking the results. They're all in a 10-block radius of DuPont Circle or Old Town Alexandria, and many of them need programmers and will have open positions listed on their website.

7. Good luck to you! In similar straits here in L.A...
...though not in IT (writing/teaching).

Can you teach/tutor any aspect of IT? (or anything related? Math, science, etc?)

I've gotten a few tutoring clients while looking for more stable gigs....

Take care!

30. Writing/teaching opportunity
Go to ets.org
Look at online scoring opportunities. They have openings for people experienced in teaching writing. They need raters for the exams administered to the CA students. There are several positions available. See if you qualify and apply for any that you do. You never know, you might get one. This job is great because you can work from home.

22. Ifi you need something like
work from home to tide you over and help pay bills you might try Butler Hill. http://www.butlerhill.com/

This website will help you find work at home positions that are reputable companies: http://www.workplacelikehome.com/forum/index.php

This page will tell you how to apply to Butler Hill in particular: http://www.workplacelikehome.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=276

I think BH is paying $14.50 - $16.00 an hour but not sure. I know that it's no less than $13.50 an hour.

I work for Lionbridge but we are slow on work right now so I don't recommend them right now. I also work for Fortress but it doesn't pay as well, but it's not really stressful. I think Leapforce has been low on tasks right now as well, but Butler Hill seems to have more work. (All three companies have similar jobs.)

Private message me if you need more information or help.

31. TIP: Be careful w/ 3rd party recruiters
Lately, they've embarked on passing vague "opportunities" for which they're REQUIRING advance credit checks by SS#. The line is that you'll find out specifics "later." Many have so little command of the English language as well that it is hard to imagine they would even have access to hiring managers or prime VMO systems at major employers.

32. Check your PMs
These might not be jobs you'd be looking at, but they're within a 6 hour move/drive of where you are now. Can't really help with the relocation, but very few companies are doing that now so I hope that you could be in a position to pack up a U-Haul and go a relatively short distance.
