Occupy Wall St. Day 4. Arrests & Renewed Determination to Stay. (pic heavy)
Edited on Tue Sep-20-11 07:23 PM by sabrina 1
Day TwoCandlelight Vigil on the evening of the second day of Occupy Wall Street.

Day 4: At least five arrested, one may be in critical condition

Heavy police presence. The 1%ers really have bought themselves lots of protection from the 99%ers

More from what I believe is the official site of the protest:

A Message From Occupied Wall Street

Published 2011-09-20 12:50:30 UTC by OccupyWallSt

We're still here. We intend to stay until we see movements toward real change in our country and the world. This is the third communiqu from the 99 percent.

Today, we occupied Wall Street from the heart of the Financial District. Starting at 8:00 AM, we began a march through the Wall Street area, rolling through the blocks around the New York Stock Exchange. At 9:30 AM, we rang our own "morning bell" to start a "people's exchange," which we brought back to Liberty Plaza. Two more marches occurred during the day around the Wall Street district, each drawing more supporters to us.

Hundreds of us have been occupying One Liberty Plaza, a park in the heart of the Wall Street district, since Saturday afternoon. We have marched on the Financial District, held a candlelight vigil to honor the fallen victims of Wall Street, and filled the plaza with song, dance, and spontaneous acts of liberation.

Food has been donated to the plaza from supporters all over the world. Online donations for pizza, falafels, and other food are coming in from supporters in Omaha, Madrid, Montreal, and other cities, and have exceeded $8,660 . (Link to donate: www.wepay.com/donate/99275 )

They have retained a law firm to handle arrests and other legal issues also.

Day Four

The protesters had set up their own media equipment to cover the protests.

Here is video of another arrest. He is one of the organizers who was just using a megaphone to speak to the people gathered in the park. I do not have his name yet.

Also arrested today:

This is Jason Amadi. He has since been released and spoke to Democracy Now's Amy Goodman on NPR. You can see what he has to say here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfcYr3KCDw4&feature=shar...

I do not have this protester's name either, although I believe she gave to witnesses before she was led away.

Censorship of occupywallstreet by Yahoo?

There have been many reports from people that Yahoo is blocking their emails if they mention #accupywallstreet.

Think Progress now verifies that the rumors are true:

Yahoo Censoring Emails Referring to #occupywallstreet

Protests (Updated)
By Lee Fang on Sep 20, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Yahoo blocks users from sending e-mails about the OccupyWallSt.org website with a message claiming "suspicious activity"
Thinking about e-mailing your friends and neighbors about the protests against Wall Street happening right now? If you have a Yahoo e-mail account, think again. ThinkProgress has reviewed claims that Yahoo is censoring e-mails relating to the protest and found that after several attempts on multiple accounts, we too were prevented from sending messages about the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations.

Over the weekend, thousands gathered for a Tahrir Square-style protest of Wall Streets domination of American politics. The protesters, organized online and by organizations like Adbusters, have called their effort Occupy Wall Street and have set up the website: www.OccupyWallSt.org . However, several YouTube users posted videos of themselves trying to email a message inviting their friends to visit the Occupy Wall St campaign website, only to be blocked repeatedly by Yahoo. View a video of ThinkProgress making the attempt with the same blocked message experienced by others (click full screen for a better view of the text)

UPDATE Yahoo apologizes for blocking emails. Says it was unintentional:

Yahoo! apologises for blocking Wall Street protest emails

Yahoo! has apologised for blocking emails that contained content about the protests currently underway in Wall Street. As reports emerged on Twitter that several Yahoo! users had difficulty sending emails as soon as they included a link to the protesters website occupywallstreet.org, members of the Storyful team attempted the same thing. The result? Your message was not sent. Suspicious activity has been detected on your account.

We have to take them at their word. Twitter too has been said to be censoring the hash tag #occupywallstreet. It got over 1.3 million tweets in 48 hours this weekend, but wasn't trending from what I understand. No statement from them so far. It's too bad if they did that, as they were so helpful to the Egyptians when Mubarak killed the Internet, giving tech advice on how they could get around the block.

There is no doubt who these guys are working for ~ protect that bull at all costs!

One thing is certain. The World is watching this protest and supporting it. Even if there are not millions actually on the street, yet, there are millions watching, regardless of virtually no media coverage, and millions sending their support from across the country and the globe. Because all of them have been victims of Wall St.'s greed.

Bravo and a huge thanks to those who are in NYC tonight on our behalf.

I am trying to collect info, telephone numbers etc. of Unions, Homeless and Unemployed advocacy groups, Veterans groups etc to let them know about this. The Assembly agreed I believe to try to contact other large groups who are also affected by Wall St corruption.

Also calling all my friends in NY to tell them to go and bring friends and families. If you can't be there physically, it doesn't matter, there is a lot we can do to help them from wherever we are.

7. I've been looking for information on them, but haven't found
anything. I think they have all been released and now they have hired a law firm to handle all arrests. Their assembly meets to make plans every night. They are talking about the arrests right now.

The speaker is saying that one of the people arrested today lost a tooth. I think they are planning to help him with that. You can view the live stream here http://www.livestream.com/globalrevolution

Now they are talking about having a benefit concert. I really admire them. They are discussing who will organize it, permits etc. Very good idea. She is saying it will be in three weeks, giving them time to 'raise awareness'.

13. A lot of people are skeptical about this, but I have a feeling
it is only going to grow. They may not have as many thousands as we would like there yet, but I think that is going to change.

Just read on the live stream that a popular rocker is looking for someone to contact so he can come help out. There will be more of that too.

This is something everyone is upset over so it has broad appeal, unlike say, the war which so many wrongly supported.

20. Well, they've been (1) focused, (2) non-violent, and (3) street-level
All three are critical improvements over the way protests have tended to go in recent years.

1) The message isn't perfectly fine-tuned yet -- because they don't know what they could demand that would actually fix things -- but simply the fact that they're protesting Wall Street says most of it. Roughly speaking, it's something like, "this place belongs to us the people, not to big money" and "get your hands off my government."

2) They've been totally non-violent. Even the usual black bloc window-smashing component is mercifully absent.

3) The very fact that it's small -- basically 500-2000 people in a park -- means there are no tv cameras perched somewhere overhead as the crowds pass by. If you want to cover it at all, you have to do it up close and personal. And there has been so little mainstream coverage that the images which are getting out mainly come from the protesters' own livestream and photos.

So all those things together give it a very different flavor from the mass protests of the last 40-plus years. And even the statements from Anonymous have a strange, self-assured note like nothing we've seen in the past -- like this latest:

http://www.presstorm.com/2011/09/press-release-anonymou...

OPERATION ORWELL REWIND

Greetings and salutations,

Our respects to the wealthy who have the talent and the resources to make a community thrive. An honorable mention to those in power who have the talent and the opportunities to inspire others. At this time we Anons are supporting and wishing you do well. However, we have a stern message for those who are addicted to risk. They have resources and they have opportunities but they have not an ounce of talent nor do they appreciate hard work.

As we have engaged in #OccupyWallStreet, we have seen more evidence of a disturbing condition. Those who are trusted with the safety of the people are committing violent crimes against citizens in the name of safety. How can this be? It is tempting to blame the nearest perpetrator and be seduced by limp 60s and 90s activism memes. You saw him hit that person. Hes the guilty one. Perhaps, you can write a letter to your public official. Maybe you can display your anger where the offender cannot avoid it. You might even start a protest. But as we have seen with Operation Orlando, Operation Fullerton, Operation BART, and others this is a common problem. Public officials cover their mistakes with fake supporters. Police officers continue to abuse the public with impunity. Civil Rights violations continue to be validated by the blanket of concern for public safety. There is a problem with a simple analysis. It does not explain how this behavior has become so common.

Naturally, Anons have been looking at the news of the last 10 years and the history of our communities and countries for the last few decades and a pattern emerges. A superstructure seems to be imposed upon us. And it seems to feed on the pain of the oppressor as well as the oppressed. This is an interesting situation. The fact that these problems persist may be partly explained by the hypothesis that we are in fact not hitting the root. Without spending too much time on theories let us get to the point.

21. Yes, they are very focused and completely unconcerned about
the naysayers mainly because they are committed to this. I am very impressed with the Assembly they hold each night and the careful progress they are making each day. I read that some of them have been studying the American who influenced the Egyptians, regarding how to conduct a non-violent revolution.

Each night they accomplish a little more, incrementally they are building something, a movement maybe. And they are not seeking media attention, they have set up their own media. And that is what the cops targeted today.

When they need something, they decide what it is then send out requests. Eg, the other night they realized they would need a generation. So a message went out with the exact amount they needed, and they got it without a day I believe.

They have made a list of goals and I am going to put up an OP about this and about they come to the decisions they make.

I love that message from Anonymous. A very interesting group. I don't buy that it is just a bunch of kids who are computer savvy. There is a certain wisdom that is very mature about their philosophy even if it is conveyed in a sort of super-hero, comic-book fashion, which may be deliberate. I feel as if there is someone or some group behind the troops.

I saw a very well down video from one of them last night. It is a little outrageous, but at the same time it says what needs to be said in a very compelling way, and an appealing way to anyone who is longing for the good guys to have a champion, finally.

Thanks for your post, I am very glad they are doing this and hope it is the start of something a lot bigger. We are long overdue for that.

9. K&R. I do have question though.
Have they released any goals or anything like that yet? If they want this to succeed, they need to start working on formulating a clear and relatable message to the rest of the world about their goals and how to solve the current problems. I'm not trying to be cynical, just a question/advice for what it's worth, which admittedly is not much.

10. Yes, that is what they are doing every night, (going on right now
which you can see on the live stream channel here http://www.livestream.com/globalrevolution .

They have come up with a list of goals. I didn't include that information here as the OP was getting so long. But I'm going to do an OP on their Assembly which at first seemed a bit scattered to me, but now I am really impressed with how this works. Very democratic.

Eg, one of their goals (aside from the ideology of ending corruption etc and money in politics) immediate goals, is to contact large groups such as Union members, advocacy groups for those fore-closed on etc. I wondered if they would do that, and was thrilled to see they took that suggestion which was made by many people. They then assign 'groups' to work on those goals.

Tonight eg, they announced they are planning to have a concert in about three weeks, and assigned a group to work on that.

I have a feeling this will only grow, as one guy said on twitter, the protests in Spain started to really grow after the police started arresting people.

I am very impressed with them frankly. They have managed to collect enough money to hire lawyers today, and another group is handling that. Very organized, and they have also stated they are ignoring any negative input and staying focused on what they have to do and why they are there.

Edited on Wed Sep-21-11 03:05 AM by joshcryer
Assuming of course the survival of the movement and no immediate mass arrests (I've been part of these before, it can go either way, they sure do have spirit). I expect mass arrests to happen and dispersals to occur in due course, as it grows. Hopefully it will grow faster than the authorities expect at which case mass arrests will have no effect.

Here are the minutes of what has passed so far:

9/17/2011: http://nycga.cc/?p=276#more-276
9/18/2011: http://nycga.cc/?p=351

They're having problems transcribing the minutes and can use volunteers.

I can't find that information although I have seen it. Will keep looking though and I will post it when I do.

They were asking for donations for a generator and food, but seems they got enough for that so far. See here: https://www.wepay.com/donate/194073?utm_campaign=donati...

If you watch the live stream there is a number to call running at the bottom of the screen for the law firm protesters should call if they are arrested. The livestream is stopped but will be back in a few minutes I think.

Don't worry, if they can camp out in the cold and risk getting arrested, I can at least keep posting about how they are doing especially since the media is ignoring them, for now :-)

19. Unbelievable, and really unacceptable to spend that much money
on protecting a symbol. But they beat up the tax payers who are paying for all this. There is no question when you look at these photos and see the way the police act towards Americans exercising their rights, that we no longer have a civilian police force.

I think the Assembly should put this on their list. It's time to get these cops working for the people, or we should not be paying for them.

27. Yes, that is true, and some of the protesters, when chanting
'we are the 99%' have said to the cops 'and that includes you'!

Also, over the weekend some protesters reported saying to the cops 'I bet you'd rather be with us' and a couple of cops nodded, one female cop apparently said 'if I were not in uniform, I would be marching with you right now'. However, most will do as they are told when it comes down to it.

53. Josh, I saw a claim
that the official list of candidate demands for #occupywallstreet is located at:

http://coupmedia.org/occupywallstreet/occupy-wall-stree...

Do you know if this is true?

37. Maybe you can if you are near another major city like SF.
It's catching on, people are inspired by these protesters. I am making a list of cities that are now organizing occupations in solidarity with the Wall St. protesters. :-)

Here's a partial list from my memory:

San Francisco
Chicago
LA
Cleveland
Atlanta

I just saw from one of the protesters that they have collected $10,000 for food! People are really supporting them! :applause:

And now they are getting more help from other groups. This report from the protestors tonight:

Speaker just got out of a meeting with the International Workers of the World and they are ON BOARD and wanting to HELP! HUGE CHEERS! They will be joining them on thursday for a global day of action. Want to know if its ok for a speaker from the IWW to inform the GA on local labor struggles. Want someone to stop by 12:30 PM tomorrow to talk to GA. Want to bring workers to join them in a night march with their children for all to see the solidarity. MORE HUGE CHEERS. IWW has giving them the little red songbook and the little red coloring book.

Can the IWW join us? CHEERS!!! Giant IWW banner provided.

I hope the Unions and other large groups arrange to bring more people to help them also.

But tonight the numbers sleeping there almost doubled, maybe because of the police's actions today.

And, one more thing, Wisc. is organizing car pools to get people to NYC to join them.

@jeffrae
Jeff Rae

Pls bring cheese curds I miss them from #wiunion RT @flipsville: @OccupyWallSt Hang in there ppl are forming carpools in Wisconsin to join U

44. Good site, I just found it yesterday
more and more people are covering it. The Dissenter Blog is good, as they are live-blogging each day and seem to know which people on twitter are reliable since they are right there..

Thanks for the link dixiegirrrrl :-)

42. It's a busy week for protests in NYC...
between this and the UN in session and all the kooks protesting Palestinian's potential statehood, the cops are busy on the East River.

49. Their numbers doubled in the Park last night from approx.
296 who slept over on the first night, to approx. 500 after the arrests. Not smart on the part of the cops to do what they did.

50. Here's an update ~ Wisc is sending buses to help out:
From the live blogger at the a href="http://dissenter.firedoglake.com /"]Dissenter Blog

9:49 AM A couple of buses from Wisconsin on the way to Occupy Wall Street.

There were more arrests this morning. And this on one of the women arrested yesterday:

Disgusting. They are also disabling their media equipment, for the livestream. It's down again with a message saying they are repairing it.

Going to tweet a thank you, people have been asking him why he isn't covering it, so they should thank him now, imo.

Cops seem to be focused on the livestream mostly. Making silly excuses for removing the projector last night eg 'it's blocking vision'! Lol! I think they meant it is providing vision to far too many people.

Amy Goodman also doing some good commentary on it.

And car pools are being arranged from different states for people who want to go, cheaply. I'll post more on that later.

54. I don't agree with all of their demands...
Edited on Thu Sep-22-11 10:31 PM by tcaudilllg
but I'm nonetheless hoping they invade the NYSE. :P At the end of the day, the only real problem is jobs, jobs, jobs. That will only be mitigated when unions recover, in my opinion. Productivity increases made due to better use of technology = permanently lost jobs. Make it harder for companies to buy technology, by raising the cost, and that would solve the problem in the short term. Still, justice against the Wall St. buffoons has its own value.

I'm really hoping people get on with this. People should start scheduling protests alongside the OccupyWallSt people. Maybe the cab drivers union and other public unions.

57. They are forming groups, eg, a Labor Group, which will be
contacting Unions and have already been in touch with the International Workers Group who are or did join them I think yesterday. They have had speakers from that group at the Assembly Meetings this week.

They have a legal group also, to handle arrests and any court procedures they may be faced with. They have a medical group and several others so far.

Their main focus so far has been on the money in politics and the influence of Wall St. on our electoral system. They take suggestions for what their goals should be and then when a goal is accepted, they form a group to pursue it. Eg, I believe they formed a group to arrange for benefit concerts to raise money for equipment and other necessities, food etc. since they plan to be there for months.

I think it is going to grow, it has already. Other cities are now joining them in solidarity. I'm going to try to get a full list of those today so people can go if they want to, and can't get to NY. :-)
