2. I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you...
I suspect most attendees will be gone by the end of the day. The United States, however bad the economy is, isn't Egypt, Tunisia or Syria.

9. Since when is a 'V' mask a sign of importance?
I've seen it used like this more than a few times:

18. Yes, he tried to blow up the English parliament building in the 17th century
Edited on Sat Sep-17-11 05:14 PM by RZM
From what I've read, that's where we get the word 'guy' to mean any man. Has something to do with the popularity of burning dummies of him in effigy and somehow 'guy' started to stick as a reference to a man.

Actually that's what is so funny about the image I posted. Ron Paul is a member of Congress, so with that image his followers are essentially arguing that he should blow himself up. I never quite got it.

What I'm wondering now is why on earth that the use of the image would be significant. So people at the protest are wearing Guy Fawkes masks. I'd be surprised if they weren't.

19. Guy Fawkes was an actual Person who was a revolutionary in England.
They didn't like the way things were going. He's become a symbol of protest and revolution. Have you seen V for Vendetta? His image came back after that. V was protesting the Big Brother aspects of the government.

20. Yes I know all of this. He was a real person
Actually my grandmother's birthday is Nov. 5 (Guy Fawkes Day).

So people who saw the movie like the image. That's nice and all, but is it really significant? I'm not trying to diss anybody here. If you like the image, then by all means, use it (though like I said, it's a little odd that the Ron Paul people do). I just don't think it says all that much. These people would believe all of the same things without the mask, so who really cares?

32. It has, as it should, become an image of revolution, of protest.
And yes, I think it is significant. Those guys died because they believed in something. It wasn't the right something according to the government. They were convicted of treason and killed.

5. Our oppression is much more subtle.
But I would not discount people's anger.

We are not a "land of the free" or are we a shining beacon of light. We are only slightly better then the douchebags we openly overthrow militarily and not so openly.

6. Or, that a relatively small demonstration isn't as newsworthy as a plane crash...

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/09/protesters-begin-effort-to-occupy-wall-street/

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/09/protesters-begin-effort-to-occupy-wall-street/

Local media has also been covering this:

http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/147351/protesters-begin-to--occupy--wall-street
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/17/wall-street-protest-begins-with-demonstrators-blocked/

If your concern is that there's no video, perhaps it's because this is not the sort of crowd that comes to Washington for protests, and a few thousand people aren't as interesting as a plane crash in Nevada.

I don't begrudge anyone's right to protest, but this isn't Egypt or Tunisia, and the demands of the protestors are a lot more vague to the low information voter than democracy and basic freedoms.

13. I think the REAL news is that there isn't any coverage, per se, and
I find it ironic that here in America, the police blocked these peoples' rights to protest where they wanted.

The plane crash is a tragedy, but so is what Wall Street has done to the people of America.

15. Covering a crash is easy...
it is impressive... it has a lot of drama, and blood and gore (which they will never show).

Covering WS requires actual investigative reporting. It is work.

:hi:

That said apparently from the twitter... the cops are blocking media access... take that with grain of whatever your preferred is.

And while I follow the crash... professional interest in EMS operations... I am even more interested in this protest and the changing zeigeist... trends.

But the crash... it is cotton candy... easy to produce and all that, and very sweet. This... is a complex cabernet that has taken years to produce and get ready.

29. Do you think his college kid supporters...
... who seem to turn out en'mass to protests like this actually know what Ron Paul stands for?

Do they know Ron Paul would completely dismantle things like Social Security and Medicare? Do they realize he is for ending pretty much any Federal role in helping people at all?

Ron Paul is about the most prominent anti-progressive politician around? Do these fat and happy college kids out for a good time realize there is more to Ron Paul than legalizing dope and ending wars?

36. Yes, a different kind of awareness seems to be developing.
Wisc was fantastic. And then there are the Union actions, in CA over the summer, against the Multi-nationals and we should be supporting them more imo. Now the Longshoremen. Going to write something about that situation when I get a chance. If we support them, they can defeat the Global effort to crush the Unions and to lower pay, which is what that Corp they are protesting is doing.

The press is not covering the Longshoremen fairly at all, hardly even mentioning the reason for their protests. They need better PR because what they are fighting is not for them, it is for all Americans as people would see if they knew the whole story. Shame on our media, they are so complicit in the attacks on American workers.

But there is hope. It's like America is beginning to wake up and other parts of the world who have doing this for months, like Spain and the Brits eg, are thrilled and are offering their support :-)

35. I'm hoping and praying that this is the catalyst of the protest movement we need.
The movement that will only grow larger, until it cannot be denied. So far, no violence, but when this movement becomes big, trust me, the govt. will lay down some serious shit. It will get ugly and bloody.

Edited on Sun Sep-18-11 06:58 AM by Fly by night
Don't know about you, but this weird pro is ...

... fired up and ready to go!

If we don't stop high-level, coordinated, condescending conspiracies to gut the essense of this country, if the consent of the governed means nothing now, then we have no country. Then the democratic ideal is dead.

As for me, I'm unwilling to let Lady Liberty go.

As for me, I'm ready to take my country back.
