Obama is now radioactive.
He will drag down the rest of the ticket in 2012. With a new candidate we can staunch the bleeding. Even with nothing more than a vigorous primary we can at least salvage our credibility for 2014 and beyond.

But if we rally behind Obama just because he's "my , right or wrong," he will poison the senate races and secure GOP margins in the house.

The fact is, a conservative Catholic republican won a significant portion of the vote from a group that generally doesn't hold many fond memories of Catholics.

It wasn't a punitive vote against Weiner.

It wasn't big corporate money because the DCCC dumps a ton of money into this including a big, last minute push.

I haven't seen historical off-year election voter turnout comparisons but I'll hazard a guess even that poultice will fail to relieve the sting. Some people vote with their ballots, dollars, their feet or even their butts. A vote is still a vote.

This was a vote on Obama in a D+5 district that hasn't gone GOP in 90 years. Gore won 67%

“They can spin all they want,” said the Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf yesterday. “This is about the fact that a good portion of the district doesn't trust president on the economy, doesn’t trust him on the state of Israel. You put it together you have a toxic cocktail. Now, you tell me: If you can’t win Jewish voters here, you can’t win ethnic Catholic voters here, how do you win them in Missouri? How do you win them in Florida?”

Here's the part that should terrify us --

Actually, this disastrous election gave the Democrats a few hints. The party tried, and failed, to wound Turner by telling voters he’d provide one more Republican vote to weaken entitlements. That worked in New York’s 26th district, where Democrat Kathy Hochul tore pages out of the Ryan plan and made her Republican opponent eat them. In the 9th, Turner and his surrogates tried to neutralize the entitlement issue by promising not to cut entitlements. In two robocalls, Koch promised voters that Turner wouldn’t cut Medicare or Social Security. The weekend before the election, Hikind said the same thing, and bolstered his case by saying Democrats were risking the programs.

People no longer fear threats to SS and Medicare because Obama himself has decided to tap-dance on the 3rd rail of politics.

Add to that discontent, right or wrong, over foreign policy and his seeming impotence to undue the harm of the Bush economic policies and we will see the Perfect Electoral Storm next year.

We can complain, truthfully, that he was dealt a bad hand but presidents aren't elected to fold or bluff, they're elected to win. The question before the 2012 electorate isn't "Is Obama to blame?" It's "Can he fix it?" or "Is he making it worse?" He called a joint session of congress to fix the economy and the only thing it fixed was insomnia. Who cares what the GOP thinks, the evidence is the party is filled with doubts and if they have doubts you better believe the independents long ago turned away.

Please don't tell me how much we need to keep the Perromneylin beast out of the White House; that horse is out of the barn and sitting in the Oval Office. The only thing left is measuring the drapes. We need to realize we might lose the senate and the GOP will become entrenched in the House for the foreseeable future. This is no longer about winning this is about stopping the losses. We need enough dems left over to block the bills and judicial nominations we know are coming.

Save the senate while there is still time.

15. Sometimes you have to step back and regroup, cut your losses
rethink how you do things and get back out in front of people.

That's not DIYD-DIYD it's common sense and *that* appeals to people.

We have the winning ideas but this is not the president to present them. If he drags down the ticket we could see dems locked out for several cycles. We need to show that we can learn and adapt because blind devotion out of desperation is not sexy.

In spite of numerous DU posts by OP and others, the primary candidate has not appeared. Somebody has to do the campaigning. That would be a number of people who really want that person enough to work for them to reach national prominence.

Funny how that works. No one can just decide they are going to be the Democratic Presidential Nominee. They have to attract enough supporters enthusiastic enough to work for them. Even before that, they have to be interested in running themselves.

It is never out of bounds to tell someone that you think their political opinions are wrong. It's the whole "You can't have an opinion because you haven't fixed the problem" response that sets me off. Personally, I don't see a challenge happening, but attacking people for having an opinion, or de-legitimizing their feelings, or implying anyone who feels that way is some sort of evil dirt-bag spy, well, that grinds my gears.

PS: The de-legitimizing-of-feelings-thing is especially irksome, since those feelings are mostly made up of frustration and a sense of helplessness. Pointing out to someone who feels like the OP that they can't say something because they are helpless is particularly nasty.

If any of the OPers (and there seem to be quite a few today) had taken five minutes to send an email to the prospective candidate of their choice, I'd have a hell of a lot more respect for them.

I'm sticking with the President and the Party, but I've been in touch with leadership on multiple occasions providing my opinion on current issues. Will it change their minds? I don't know, but at least I made the effort.

85. Shouldn't the whole "we need primary challenger" claim
be followed by specifically working for who they want to run (and who wants to run?) When it comes to this particular thing, it's not going to appear out of nowhere. I think the objection is to the idea that the government is not we the people but some gift from somewhere that can be complained about as not good enough and foisted onto someone else.

People who don't get involved can have opinions, but then others can comment that hey it takes work - it is not something just given, that others are under a duty to give.

95. The Jews in the district voted for the Democrat (except the Orthodox)
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 11:17 PM by oberliner
The Republican did very well with the Orthodox Jews (about 1/3rd of the Jewish population of the district - pretty solidly Republican voters) and very poorly with the non-Orthodox Jews (who voted 2-1 for the Democrat).

The non-Jews in the district voted overwhelmingly for the Republican.

The Catholics were especially supportive of the Republican - he carried about 70 percent of that demographic (and a bit more than half of non-Catholic Christians).

In post-election surveys, most cited the economy and entitlement programs as the most important issue in their decision.

The GOP candidates are dingbats, but so is Turner and he managed to grab a seat that always goes dems. Historically, presidents don't win reelections with the numbers Obama currently has to deal with. The first step to solving this problem is admitting there's a problem to fix.

40. Message discipline is useless if the message is, "my party right or wrong"
There's another thread stating Obama shows a "breezy willingness" to throw away the remains of the liberal platform.

That thread currently has +37 recs.

I'm not here calling the president names like "closet republican" as is often seen here, I'm simply stating he's an albatross around the neck of what remains in the senate. His own party is alternately embarrassed, befuddled and furious with him. People claim he's betrayed the liberal brand and I'm saying that will destroy the liberal brand.

To be opposed by the GOP is one thing, birds shouldn't expect fish to fly, but what serious rationale am I suppose to use to support someone who is damaging us from inside?

44. People no longer fear threats to SS & Medicare because Obama is the one making them
that preemptive willingness to cut these programs conditions people to begin viewing the unraveling of the safety net as inevitable - a Democrat is signaling the charge. Now if Republicans make their disparaging remarks about Social Security and Medicare it's no longer a disqualification, because evidently Democratic inner circles share their attitude that these programs are unsustainable.

When authors like Matt Stoller warn that Obama is ruining the Democratic Party, this is the kind of thing they mean. Unemployment can persist at unacceptably high levels without attracting notice or proposed remedies until it's election season, and, meanwhile, at the very top and center of the Party, the Democrat with the loudest megaphone has been relentlessly assaulting the party's brand identity with the voters. The first is a sin of omission, but the second is one of commission. We are supposed to be the party that created the New Deal social insurance program and that protects this institution from elitist attacks, not the party that hatchets a chunk out of it here, chisels a little more out of it there, and invites the other elitist party to join in the dismemberment.

Obama didn't bring any "new kind of politics" to Washington, just a mistaken and losing variety, which is best kept in a university classroom where it can't do much harm. Worst of all, the losses for Democrats could extend broadly beyond the White House, and amount to lasting damage to the party's image as advocate for the common citizen, and as the defensive alliance of those who can't defend themselves.

84. Hank Sheinkopf is an idiot. He's disgusted me since 2005
Not an impressive guy to quote

This election result was bad but this response is way overboard. The republican played up the Dem (and Obama's) backing the constitutional right of Muslims to build that Islamic center, the Dem backing sex marriage in New York and how he'd back Obama's anti-Israel stance which is made up. Those upset by these things, as orthodox Jews are likelier to be are likelier to get out to vote and they did.

It's not a good sign but it is not some huge heavy omen

Obama has higher approval then Dems or repubs in house or senate.

56. This OP is built upon a false premise
I've never been an enthusiastic Obama supporter (I didn't support him in the primary), but you're assuming first that he's going to lose no matter what and then arguing everything else from that supposition.

I haven't seen any data at all to support that. The latest Qunnipiac poll I could find is linked below (from Aug. 31). It shows Obama 3 points ahead of Perry and tied with the Mittster:

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/08/quinnipiac-obama-matchups-with-romney-perry-in-a-dead-heat.php

Yes I know. Polls have their flaws, it might be a hard fought battle and yes, Obama could lose. But that is far from certain right now - and besides, there's a lot of mudslinging to be done on the Republican side before we even get to the general. Who knows how any candidate is going to look coming out of that?

If you want to argue for a primary challenge, that's your business. But at least be honest with yourself and with everybody else and admit that as it stands now, 2012 is at worst a toss up and at best leaning ever so slightly in the president's direction. It has most certainly NOT already been decided. I'd have a lot more faith in your opinions if you'd base your argument on facts and let the chips fall where they may, rather than tweaking reality to make your own plan sound like the only hope for the country.

Pres. Obama is a brilliant politician and the fact that you can't see it doesn't make it any less true.

He beat the entire Clinton political machine with very few resources at his disposal. He now has more resources than any politician in history.

Opposing President Obama is what is radioactive. That is the poison that will cause damage to this party and to this nation.

80. I could not agree more. It's so true.
It's like Obama has been trying to make republicans like him and vote for him the whole time he has been in office, despite the fact that the chances o this ever happening were less than zero.

This, among so many other seemingly senseless political mistakes, has resulted in almost every political group except for the Third Way being alienated by Obama, and his ideological and policy ambiguity, particularly his perceived attack on SS and Medicare.

The thing is, we've been screaming at him and his ardent supporters on a daily basis that this toxicity was inevitable if it kept up, and our screaming was of no avail, they didn't listen, and now it's probably way past too late for Obama to rehab his cred as an effective Democrat.

Simply bringing up making changes to SS and Medicare is akin to political suicide for a sitting President, and especially for a sitting Democratic President. WTF was he thinking?!?

Obama has, for no apparent reason whatsoever, poisoned himself politically; you are so right, he is now toxic to Democratic legislators.

I'd really, really, really like to see Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, with his practical life experience and common sense progressive approach to governing, come in out of the blue, primary Obama, win the primary, and take the GE along with a larger Senate majority and significant gains, or better yet, a majority, in the House.

Obama has made himself into a lame duck by shooting off his own wing and his own foot.

99. Obama may not want a second term. He's a young man, his
future earning potential is guaranteed win or lose. His families concern over
his safety must be far more acute now then when he was a popular candidate.

There's just no logical explanation for the choices he's made regarding his staff
or his approach to keeping the campaign promises that seemed a given. There
could be economic and global scenarios we are not privy to and he may just lack
the stomach or the desire to be in office when the inevitable occurs.

I understand this site is being monitored by the right wing nuts. But, if Obama's not
going to fight we had better be willing and able to do so. Four to eight years under
any of the repukes running will be a Hell this country will never recover from.

91. Lipstick on a pig.....

...that's what trying to "save" this system is tantamount to. I'm sorry but I have no more energy to waste upon this corrupted and wholly inadequate system of governance. And like all things in nature, once a segment of the eco-system loses its symbiocity -- its ability to work and function in cooperation with all other systems, it is only matter of time before greater forces overtake it, demolish it and starts anew.

The problem isn't Obama per se. He is merely symptomatic of the inherent weaknesses of the system. The core of the problem lies in the rank corruption in our society at-large, and within ourselves. Until we acknowledge this, we will get nowhere and do nothing but slip further and further from our intended goal.

- Because you cannot build of country nor any kind of fair and/or desirable future upon a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lies_My_Teacher_Told_Me">foundation of lies......

new model that makes the existing model obsolete." ~Richard Buckminster Fuller

92. Know what the saddest thing about this event? Republicans have lost several special elections
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 10:53 PM by Liberal_Stalwart71
in the past two years. Do you think that the Teabaggers are all doom and gloom about the Republican Party's chances? Are the Republicans?

When Republicans lose elections, they don't hold their heads in shame and proclaim that all is lost. They regroup. They act as if they didn't lose a thing (look at Sarah Palin's rewrite of history). After a loss, no matter how devastating, they work towards the next election.

Why can't Democrats take the losses and wins in stride? Here you have a congressional district with very peculiar demographics; the trends in demographics are so dynamic that this district will cease to exist less than two years from now.

And yet, I come back here on DU and get doom and gloom scenarios?

Why do Democrats turn on the Corporate Media meme and run with every narrative that it creates?

I don't get this at all.

We can sit around and cry, sulk, bitch and moan, feeling sorry for ourselves and buying into our own sense of inferiority. Go ahead, help yourself. As long as at the end of the day, we get out there and work our asses of to get progressives elected in 2012!

Good luck with that.

I think the strategy is for the guys in office is to govern well, demonstrate good government, provide a contrast and a good alternative to the other side. Obama's fundamental commitment to the country working together cooperatively toward our goals isn't going to change.

In any case, it is very likely it will come down to the economy, more than what anyone has or hasn't done. And the economy (arguably) may be the one thing that neither side has a way to "fix", as a fix seems to require meeting an ever-growing demand for jobs, and an ever-growing demand for economic growth - both of which can't be met in the current age of energy and resource constraints. Of course, you'd have to tell people that...

YES we need to work on congress, sadly as long as reid is majority leader in the congress there is DICK that can be done, even if we DID manage a true super majority!

if we can get the house back - likely - that i'll be sated for now

perhaps obama has learned there is ZERO dealing with the gop as long as the teahaddists are in charge.
