I consider every day a miracle. It is one that too many people take for granted.

Every single day is filled with many, many good things. It must be so, or else all of the bad would completely overwhelm us all.

I went through a succession of major illnesses a few years ago. Since then, I have a renewed appreciation for my son's laugh, the warm Arizona sun, and the quiet beat of my own heart.

As my dear sister faces her own cancer, she's learned to appreciate much the same things. I would not wish that kind of struggle on anyone--but if we could only learn what matters without the devastation of it...
