Obama denies disaster relief for Texas fires?
I moved from Texas 11 years ago and voted for Obama during the last election but having a lot of second thoughts now. Problem for me is who is better? I vote typically liberal but mostly by issues.

So what I just read is that Obama denied disaster relief for Texas fires. Fire fighters are begging for equipment and resources, my friends in Texas are taking pictures of fires seen from their homes. My Aunt is having to evacuate her home and 911 calls indicate they can't stop the fire.

Really? Why would be not care about these fires that have burned over 2 million acres?

Lydia

thank you!

I'll be honest, this country is getting trounced with natural disasters. Vermont & Connecticut is underwater and Pennsylvania is getting slaughter by the leftovers of Hurricane Lee. Lee can't move because the pressure from Hurricane Katia is keeping it from moving (Katia won't hit land).

It's a real mess everywhere =(.

but the simple fact is, if he did, he only did what Perry apparently wants. Perry has repeatedly stated he feels the federal government should have no role in disaster relief.

Obama calls Texas rival to offer wildfire help
(AFP) 19 hours ago
WASHINGTON President Barack Obama telephoned Texas Governor Rick Perry, his main Republican rival, to offer aid in battling wildfires that have destroyed 1,000 homes and claimed four lives.

Obama offered his condolences for the lives lost and pledged any further help necessary after answering the governor's call for eight fire management assistance grants in the last few days, the White House said.

"Today the president called Texas Governor Rick Perry to express his concern for citizens of Texas impacted by the unprecedented fires," the statement said.

"The president also assured the governor that requests for additional assistance, including as recovery begins, would be quickly assessed."

24. Nice job citing where you "read" that...
http://www.kxan.com/dpp/news/politics/obama-phones-perr...

Obamas office said the federal government through DHS/FEMA and the U.S. Forest Services will continue to make federal assistance available to state and local officials as they fight the fires.

On Tuesday, FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to help Texas officials pay 75 percent of state and local government eligible firefighting costs, though Obama has not declared the situation in Texas a Major Disaster at this time.

Rick Perry's Texas cuts firefighting budget while wildfires burn

Perry's fanatical opposition to raising revenue to close Texas' budget gap meant that his allies in the Legislature had to find creative ways to cut costs, like cutting $34 million over the next two years from the agency that fights wildfires. The Forest Service is mostly volunteer-based, and the cuts will largely affect the state's assistance grants to buy volunteer departments the tools they need to fight fires.

The Forest Service was appropriated $117.7 million for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. That is not enough to cover the expense of fighting the fires currently burning across the state. For the 2012-2013 fiscal year, which began this month, the agency was appropriated $83 million.

The state has already approved supplemental spending to pay for firefighting that has already taken place, which is also $61 million short of what is needed. So, in other words, the budget intentionally appropriates less money than everyone knows the Forest Service will actually need in order to maintain the illusion of fiscal responsibility. And the Republicans will demand more federal money to make up the gap. While decrying federal spending.

So I guess this will answer your question about "who is worse"

I guess since you're only "typically liberal" you should really keep up on the issues huh?

Thanks for stopping by to insult Obama for something the State of Texas has created.

AUSTIN, Texas President Barack Obama on Friday signed a major disaster declaration for parts of Texas ravaged by wildfires in April and early May, ordering federal aid to help state and local recovery efforts.

The White House had previously rejected Texas' request for a major disaster declaration, sparking a fight with Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican who is considering a run for president.

Texas is enduring one of its worst wildfire seasons ever with more than 3 million acres scorched by flames fueled by high temperatures, drought and strong winds. One blaze that started near Possum Kingdom Lake, about 75 miles west of Fort Worth, destroyed more than 160 homes as it burned into three counties for two weeks.

Friday's declaration allows local governments in 45 counties to seek federal help paying for debris removal and emergency measures taken to save lives and protect property and public health.

Now, the reason for the initial denial was because Perry refused to release emergency funds from the state's rainy day fund..

The President did no such thing. The federal government just didn't them extra funds last spring that Perry asked for. Actually, why was he asking for federal assistance at all? He talks all big and tough to his shriveled up old White Baggers in their Hoverounds about how the federal government is forcing Socialism on us all and that perhaps Texas should secede, but when the shit hits the fan, he whines:

""I am dismayed that this administration has denied Texans the much needed assistance they deserve," Perry said in a statement Tuesday night. "It is not only the obligation of the federal government, but its responsibility under law to help its citizens in times of emergency."

I think it referred to Perry's request being denied that Texas be declared a Federal Disaster Area.

I'll see if I can find it again.

On edit: Here's one report on it:

"The rhetorical wrangling between Texas Republicans and the Obama administration over the federal response to raging Texas wildfires became more contentious today when Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison joined Gov. Rick Perry to blast the White House for denying Texas request for a federal disaster declaration..."

Obama did declared a disaster for our previous fires. They also have received FEMA grants for the fires.

Poke through FEMA's list of all the grants they've handed out this year and see how many of them are to Texas.

Obama also signed a disaster declaration for Texas wildfires earlier this year. He also called Perry yesterday, in California, and talked to him about another one for this series of fires.

Obama calls Perry about wildfires; pledges federal help with firefighting, recovery

President Barack Obama telephoned Gov. Rick Perry this afternoon to offer condolences about the ongoing wildfires and pledge federal help with firefighting and recovery, the White House said.

Obama reached Perry in California, where the governor was preparing for tonights Republican presidential debate.

During the call, the president extended his condolences for the lives that have been lost as a result of these events, the White House press office said.

After hanging up, Obama directed his national security staff to ensure that the federal government is making all resources available to Texas, the U.S. Forest Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the press office said.

President Obama signs Texas wildfire disaster declaration

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster for parts of Texas ravaged by wildfires in April and early May.

Friday's declaration allows federal aid to help state and local recovery efforts in 45 counties. The president had previously denied Texas' disaster requests, sparking a fight with Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, Gov. Perry expressed his approval of the declaration, adding, "Our prayers continue to go out to those putting their lives on the line fighting these fires, as well as those whose property and livelihoods remain in danger."

Texas is enduring one of its worst wildfire seasons in history because of high temperatures, drought and strong winds.

See how easy that was to research and disprove?

Oh, and the reason Texas is short on fire fighting funds is due to budget cuts.

Texas cut fire department funding by 75 percent this year

Under Gov. Rick Perry (R) this year, Texas slashed state funding for the volunteer fire departments that protect most of the state from wildfires like the ones that have recently destroyed more than 700 homes.

Volunteer departments that were already facing financial strain were slated to have their funding cut from $30 million to $7 million, according to KVUE.

The majority of Texas is protected by volunteer fire departments. There are 879 volunteer fire departments in Texas and only 114 paid fire departments. Another 187 departments are a combination of volunteer and paid.

For that reason, aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could be more important than ever to the state where wildfires have recently been raging.

At a press conference Monday, Perry promised to seek federal disaster relief and said that FEMA would be in the state by Wednesday.

Funny little factoid. At the time of Perry's statement on Tuesday saying FEMA would be in Texas on Wednesday, there were already on the seen at the Bastrop Complex Fire and making rounds.
