"Together We Thrive" too much for the Right Wing.
UCSON, AZ -- Some conservatives are upset over t-shirts bearing the logo "Together We Thrive: Tucson & America" that were handed out to attendees at tonight's memorial service in the McKale Center on the campus of the University Of Arizona here.

The shirts, which bear the same logo that adorns other items from the event -- including press passes, signage and volunteer t-shirts -- were placed on many of the seats in the lower sections of the arena when tonight's capacity crowd walked in.

The University Of Arizona did not immediately respond to requests for more information on the shirts, which are drawing fire in the conservative twitter- and blogosphere tonight. The White House declined to comment. A person familiar with the event confirmed the university put the event together, and was responsible for t-shirts, tickets, fliers, etc.

8. Doesnt have any divisive rhetoric in it? Sounds "Socialistic?"
There are quotes in the story from Malkin etc, but of course they don't make much sense.

11. "united we stand" is partisan (r) unity, so they figure "together we thrive" is partisan (d) unity.
they loved shoving "united we stand" down our collective necks.
they practically branded us traitors if we didn't swear by that phrase.

but now, "together we thrive"? oh, how partisan and rotten of us!

12. Memorials need slogans? T-Shirts? Guess i'm just old-fashioned
One doesn't have to be right wing to be repulsed by the idea of slogan bearing T-shirts draped over chairs at a memorial service. People who know me on D.U. usually classify me as one of the more liberal among us.

USA is #1 at being tacky! For heaven's sake who thought of 'branding' and exploiting a memorial event? Who came up with the slogan 'Together We Thrive' in the faces of people mourning their recently slain loved ones? I know if one of my loved ones was killed or wounded I'd be angry at the damn T shirts.

"Together We Thrive" indeed. What does that mean in relation to a horrible, violent massacre?

13. I wonder if the venue might have influenced the t-shirt thing...
EVERY event that involves colleges seems to have a t-shirt.

I really like t-shirts to commemorate events, though I've never been to a memorial that had a t-shirt.

Then again, I've never been to a memorial which took place at a college, with 15,000 attendees. I think keeping the venue and majority of the attendees in mind could answer a lot of the questions we have, as to why certain aspects may have seemed odd to some.

14. Imo, they were going for something broader because Arizona has a real problem.
They are a mess -- ground zero for right wing hate of all stripes. It's not the same as holding a memorial in, say, San Francisco or Milwaukee or Miami right now. :(
