Criminal healthcare: State clamps down on 17 ALFs
Edited on Sun Sep-04-11 04:49 AM by mfcorey1

The aging Hilcrest Retirement Residence in St. Petersburg was shut down in May after residents some with severe mental illness were found languishing in filthy rooms, their bodies covered with welts and scabs from bed bugs.

One AHCA regulator found at least five sets of bed linens stained with blood from where people were bitten in their beds. At least 27 residents, some sleeping in rooms with peeling paint, cracked walls and broken air conditioners, were pulled from the home after regulators said they were at risk of serious injury and major health problems." Within 24 hours, the homes license was suspended.

Regulators said they were forced to act quickly when they visited Sunshine Acres Loving Care in the Panhandle on July 8, finding sewage spewing onto the property from a busted septic tank, a broken air conditioner, and residents forced to sleep on broken-down beds with cardboard covering box springs.

Suspending license's will not work in a culture that puts profits above the welfare of people.... We need to eradicate the model legislation that is creating these horrible conditions...

2. This is how America wants to treat it's elderly and mentally ill?
We really have come far down on the rung of the ladder.

3. Horrific
If you have a relative in a nursing home, you have to visit them to make sure they are getting adequate care. We had to put my grandmother in one because she was starting to get injured because she wasn't getting her insulin right, and was doing other things that threatened her health (like stealing candy bars whenever you took her someplace - I was afraid I was going to end up in jail and quit taking her anywhere!).

Still, somebody visited her just about every day, and she was actually pretty happy there. She'd want to go back before too long so she could play cards.
