Story Update: Cow that escaped slaughterhouse in truck crash now living high life
A cow, destined for the slaughterhouse, escapes from an overturned transport vehicle. She evades capture for a month and survives on her own until finding a permanent home at an animal sanctuary with – surprise! – her new calf.

The story of Bella, the dairy cow whose life on the run following a hauler crash on U.S. 131 near Cedar Springs and subsequent happy ending captivated Press and MLive readers a year ago, sounds like a Disney movie waiting to happen.

For now, though, there's a YouTube video recounting her story and providing an update on her life since she was brought to the SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary in Manchester. The clip marks the one-year anniversary of Bella's arrival there.

She was one of 26 cows in a hauler that overturned after its driver lost control in the early hours of July 22, 2010. Of the dozen cows that got loose in the moments following the accident, all but five were recovered and completed their journey to a Milwaukee slaughterhouse.

Yvonne the Cow Still Evading German Pursuers
August 27, 2011 10:15 AM EDT

Yvonne the cow escaped from her Bavarian farm three months ago, but remains at large somewhere in the countryside.

Germany's most famous bovine escaped from her farm just days before the date of her slaughter. But now, a posse right out of the Wild West seems to be closing in on the six-year-old cow after finding a field strewn with cow pies, according to the UK Guardian.

Germany is a highly populated country, but are still plenty of forests and open spaces. Maybe Yvonne has the instincts of wild beast, as opposed to a farm animal, which have helped her survive on her own. Either way, the fugitive bovine has frustrated local authorities who want her back. They've even given the okay to shoot her on sight.

If an animal escapes the slaughterhouse, has it earned its freedom?
