Bloomberg presser: Con Ed killing power to lower east, Coney Island & the Rockaways
To protect the lines from salt water. They are in more danger of being damaged if live than off during flooding.

5. He also said to flag down a cop to drive you to shelter if you can't get a cab.
Pulling out all of the stops to end the excuses!

Now, no AC, no electric, no elevators.

16. It really does. I'm impressed that they are accommodating people's
pets too. Such a difference from past emergencies.

7. That's already been decided?
I bet it's also an effort to get those people to leave before the storm hits.

10. Early this morning, he gave the impression that it was 90%, now they announced it.
I didn't catch what the window is. Only that he is giving them time to get out because he doesn't want people stuck in elevators.

9. I'm betting that the thieves are holding meetings but
no press conferences. They must be thinking that this is their Christmas weekend.

Stay safe DUers.

Bloomy sure seems prepared. He's even holding a presser in Spanish - he is no ReTHUG

It sounds like Christmas for scumbags.

12. actually a good idea... and more than the lines
it will save millions of electronic devices. Water is only bad for electronics if there's, you know, electricity running through them. I used to service video games back in the college days. When we were driving one back in the pickup truck and it rained, we'd take it inside and let it dry out completely for several days. It would start up just fine.

13. Apparently, it isn't just the water they are concerned about
it is salt water. I am guessing the corrosive properties? The comment was related to the extra damage salt water does to live lines and cables.

May be on the link WillyT posted. Going to read that now.

15. Yes, it's the salt water damage
And if anyone was trying to stay put, they'll surely reconsider.

20. Most utlilty cables are aluminum - salt water corrodes them quickly. It's also more conductive.

18. I've liked every decision they've made so far.
The goal is clearly to get us up and running as soon as possible after the Irene passes, to minimize damage and keep us all alive.
