Eye of Irene 10 miles South of my 79 year old Dad's house right now!
The current coordinates for Irene put it on my Dad's front porch and moving North. I just spoke with him on the phone. He said the flooding was the worst he's ever seen and that the propane takes were floating off their moorings. He said his neighbor's had broken free of its line and was leaking gas - he called 911...

6. They'll likely be fine...
It is poorer side of town which didn't get its houses raised by FEMA that I'm more worried about!

5. Belhaven NC
Current coordinates are 35.2N 76.4W which is just off Jones Bay and just East of the Pamlico Sound.

3. Thanks for the report. I hope he stays safe!
Propane tanks can be dangerous things. I hadn't even thought of what to do about them in such a situation. Wow!

8. I hope he's not expecting any response from 911
because he's not going to get it for another 5-6 hours, at least. The wind should take care of the leaking propane and dissipate it as soon as it exits the tank. Should. We hope.

I know my dad refused to evacuate from a barrier island off Florida in 2004. Fortunately, there wasn't a direct hit and there was no flooding, so he came through OK, but I know what you're going through. It's scary when our old folks tell us "we all gotta die sometime and I wanna die at home" and stick it out in dangerous conditions.

9. Yeah 911 said there was nothing they could do
I think the propane will just vent out and that will be that. The eye passed 10 miles East of him as best I can tell from the weather tracking. I talked with him on the phone again and he will be fine. They didn't lose power which is a really good thing and pretty impressive for the electrical company considering 85 mph winds. I'm hoping the flooding is at max now but we don't know.

10. Flooding is a "lens" of water under the eye and outer wall
so it's likely to subside rather than get worse.

It seems he's come though the worst of this one already.

I always rode storms out at home but I never had enough money to live near a beach, so it was OK.

17. I've got relatives across the sound from him at Frisco (they evacuated)
also up on the Eastern Shore of Va in a low lying area (mandatory evac also). I've been to beautiful Belhaven.

11. it does rain sometimes.
This storm is a media extravaganza. Each time it goes toward a TS, they report it is a "near hurricane."

12. oh gosh... how's he doing now?
It's probably as stressful for you to know what he's going through as it is for him to endure it.

14. my 92-yr-old dad and his wife with Alzheimer's won't leave
They're not in great danger, but I hate the thot of them being without electricity.
The wife's daughter, who lives nearby, and who has a big house, wanted to take them to her house, but my dad refused.
it's worrisome, but I understand. It is hard for people to give up any independence.

Hope your Pop will be ok.

But he's fine and still has power!

Hope you folks in the NE do well too! Just stay prepared and aware.
