Whoopi Goldberg adopts kitten thrown from car on NYC bridge

NEW YORK - A kitten tossed from a moving car on New York City's Verrazano Bridge has found a home with Whoopi Goldberg.

"The View" co-host posted a video of the cat, nicknamed Vinny, on her Facebook page. It shows the adorable gray kitten grooming himself and batting a feather toy with his paw.

Pictures: Whoopi Goldberg

Vinny was rescued in July. An Animal Care & Control officer who happened to be driving on the bridge witnessed the kitten being thrown.

3. Why is it newsworthy when a celebrity adopts a pet?
It's great that she adopted an abandoned pet; but is that newsworthy?

4. Maybe it'll inspire others to #1 adopt an abandoned pet rather than buy a pure breed.
#2. NOT THROW LIVING THINGS OUT OF YOUR CAR LIKE THEIR TRASH

Although many newsworthy events are limited to prominence, proximity, significance and timing, others are human interest stories, i.e., stories which appeal to emotion. Television news programs often place a humorous or quirky story at the end of the show to finish on a feel-good note. Newspapers often have a dedicated area for offbeat or interesting items.

So yes, it appears to fit well within the parameters of a human interest story.

9. She has also adopted pets from Northshore Animal Rescue
in New York. I donate to this charity each month. Any one who has compassion for animals is a celebrity in my eyes.

11. The fact that a celebrity ADOPTED a companion animal instead of
purchasing a pure-bred "pocket pet" is definitely newsworthy. What SHOULD be part of this story, is the following:

The HSUS estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized.

12. Yes, it's newsworthy because the story of this kitten was around
Edited on Fri Aug-26-11 03:32 PM by Bryn
via Twitter and Facebook while ago when it was first saved so now people know who this kitten's new mommy is and that it now has a forever home. This kitty's new mommy happens to be a celebrity. The story isn't really about Whoopie, it's about this kitty that has a happy ending. :)

8. I knew she would - she certainly seemed enamoured with the little guy!
Thanks - most of us appreciate a 'feel good' story from time to time. :)
