At Low Tide, Waves Already A Third Of The Way To The Dunes
I think there could be some serious flooding with or without a direct pass of the hurricane.

I'm on eastern Long Island.

1. Based on the rotation of the hurricane
you need to prepare.

3. If you look up " New York Hurricane 1893" in wikipedia,
you can get a fairly clear picture of what could happen.

I imagine with the growth of man-made structures and increase in population, it might be worse.

On the positive side, people wouldn't feel quite as isolated, with modern tweeting, texting etc. Also more warning and time to prepare.

8. It is. I just read todays Long Island paper. They're covering it
heavily. Looks like Sunday is the expected date. So, yes, the local media is all over it. I'm sure Long Islanders will be consulting their local sources for advice.

5. Maybe visit family or a friend inland for the weekend? Just in case?
Sometimes they turn, but all the models have moved inward which is not a good sign. Here in Houston in 2001 there were over 20 deaths in the major flooding from Tropical Storm Allison.
