Message from a Clan Mother
“The Earth and myself are of One Mind.” – Hinmuuttu-yalatlat (Chief Joseph)

My Clan Mother asked me to pass a request on to members of the Democratic Underground. I told her that I wasn't confident that this was the best time to ask, but she said that it actually is the very best time. And so here goes.

There are two important phone calls and/or letters that people who are interested in supporting environmental justice efforts can and should do. E-mails are okay, but both hand-written “snail-mail” letters and direct phone calls are much more essential.

The first letter/phone call goes to President Obama. He can be reached at:
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
Comments: 202-456-1111
Switchboard: 202-456-1414

Tell President Obama that you want him to “Just Say 'NO!”” to the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. This is an urgent issue, that needs as many people of good will as possible to act on.

Second, in regard to the growing issue of “hydro-fracking,” the eyes of the nation are now on New York State. No matter if you are, or are not, a resident of our state, it is extremely important that Governor Andrew Cuomo hear from you. Here is his contact information:
New York State Capital Building
Albany, NY 12224
518-474-8390
Please call and write to Governor Cuomo, and tell him to “Just Say 'No!'” to hydro-fracking.

On a personal note: If you contact Governor Cuomo's office, feel free to tell the person that you are speaking with (or who is reading your letter) that you have a friend who is heading up a very real hunger strike this fall, directed at opening up personal communication with Andrew Cuomo. Say that your friend is presently reaching out to both former Governor Mario Cumo and Henrik Dullea, both of whom he was acquainted with during Mario's political career, when in contact with the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. And, if you want, tell them that you want a response from his office, because you plan to do your part in promoting this event in your local/area media.
We are going to make clear that besides the business interests, there are combined scientific and spiritual aspects to this conflict. My efforts are being coordinated with the top scientists involved in the fight against fracking. I'm also getting the support of the wide range of environmental organizations struggling to protect the water supply.

I need your help. Today, I am reduced to hobbling from one room to the next, using one of my canes. (It is one carved by a Seneca man in the 1880s.) I have my little electric box on my lower back, so that my I can get about. I'm bathed in “Icy-Hot” cream from my back to my knees. But your friend is struggling. Please make these calls, and/or write those letters.

Thank you for your assistance.

Your friend,
H2O Man

19. Thank you.
My youngest daughter and I saw a very large bald eagle this morning. It was flying by, rather slowly but extremely powerfully, as we were looking out a window. (I was looking first, but got her attention quickly!)

Man! Those birds are just amazing!

27. Gigantic aren't they?
Edited on Thu Aug-25-11 02:27 PM by personman
I saw one from 200-300 yards away (or more) near a wildlife preserve, and it was STILL massive. Like it could have been a car flying through the air... Clearly saw the white head and brown body... Pretty amazing.

Had to be like 5 times the size of a red-tailed hawk (which is also a large bird) unless my eyes were playing tricks on me.

Just amazing animals. Sorta feel bad for them being a nationalist symbol. Seen enough right-wingers with eagle tattoos, shirts, patches. Don't think they need our nationalists hurting their reputation. I don't blame the animal though.

37. The Audubon Society's
"Field Guide to North American Birds" lists the mature birds' wing-span as 72 to 90 inches (page 468). They stand 30 inches. Red-tailed hawks can have a a 48-inch wing-span, and stand 18 to 25 inches (page 638)

Both are amazing creatures. I've admired the red-tailed hawks since childhood; as a youth, I assisted a Central Canadian Indian herbologist, who had relocated to upstate New York, and who's name translated to "Red-tailed Hawk." He lived on the margins of "proper society," in a teepee in the woods. He was pretty much a hermit. When he was in his early 70s, there was a point where he was hospitalized for heart issues. A group of teenagers went to his lodge, stole most of his things, and burned the teepee. Life in a "box at the top of the stairs" didn't suit him. Your post brought back some memories of some of the fun he and I had before he passed.

2. Rec'd. Wishing you well, H2O Man, I am sorry that you are struggling.
I'm sending your post to myself at my work email, since I have no printer at home. I can't call the WH or Cuomo from work, but I can sit at my computer and write letters once I'm off the clock.

Be well, you are doing such important work!

20. Cycles.
I'm getting used to these cycles. My wife suggests that I haven't figured out how limited I am ....that I need to think more. And be aware that I'm not 20 still. Darned her!

She also says that I should "ask for help" on things I can't do by meself any more. Thus, the OP!

I need help on this. I recognize that even if I were in 100% top condition, I'd need help. This is a huge struggle, and far more significant that the vast majority of the public suspects. It's important enough that even in my present condition, I'm intent upon doing more than I am capable of.

I don't have any Native American blood myself, but I have many relatives that are part Ojibwe since I grew up near "The Rez", when i was little I knew an old lady, a friend's great-grandmother, who still spoke fluent Ojibwe.

the collective consciousness to Living in Harmony on Earth consciousness. An awareness that every day of life on this living planet is a combination of science and miracle. To harness those desperate, life-denying impulses of greed and hatred.

15. I'm in the Hudson Valley and we are being inundated with
TV ads for fracking. Some are sponsored by Exxon-Mobil and some by other groups. They all have very pleasant music and talk about how safe fracking is and how it will lower energy costs for all of us. It's very well done propaganda and I've seen no anti-fracking ads in response.

I contact Cuomo, Schumer, Gillibrand and my rep (Nita Lowey) regularly.

16. Rec'd. If you can get to DC before Labor Day, you can tell Pres. Obama directly.
Every day through Labor Day there is civil disobedience in front of the White House to urge President Obama not to approve the Keystone XL pipeline. (It needs his OK to go ahead.) You can make a strong statement by standing in front of the White House fence until you get arrested, or if you don't want to be arrested you can stand across the street, in Lafayette Park, and cheer on the civil disobeyers.

Thank you for your concern and resolve. You are surely aware that struggling against large corporations that are determined to profit through the destruction of our Mother can be very disheartening. They endlessly appeal every one of our victories with politicians and courts until they find the ones that will ultimately do their bidding. I have been reading your posts regarding hydro-fracking in your country. It seems similar to a long struggle we had in the country where I grew up. I hope you can find some useful information and resources in these links that might help you help all of us.
