4. I lived through Gloria in NY many years ago

The most terrifying thing was to see the HUGE trees on my property bend almost completely in half from the winds. Fortunitely, they didn't snap and fall on my house.

Be prepared, but remember this. The water in the NE, even in August, is no where near the temps in the southern waters of the US. That is in your favor. WHEN does the water reach 90 degrees in the NE? You have that factor going for you.

Good luck. An earthquake and hurriance in one week is more than anyone who have to go through.

9. But the water is unusually warm as far as southern New Jersey

I think the figure they give for the temperature necessary for a hurricane to maintain its strength is 26 degrees C -- about 80 degrees F -- and this year it's that high as far as New Jersey and almost as warm all the way to Long Island.

That's why the storm could still be a Category 2 when it hits wherever.

She has bad timing... couldn't she hit on Monday (I'm on the DC area) so we could have a three-day weekend?

7. Looking better, IMO, as that eye is moving east -

- and will spare us a direct hit. Yes, we'll have rain (which we need) and some high wind but its looking MUCH better than it was before.

that is some high winds in some large cities.
