Barbara Ehrenreich: "Turning Poverty into an American Crime"
http://www.thenation.com/article/162632/turning-poverty-american-crime

This is a follow-up of Ehrenreich's writing in Nickel and Dimed, her 2001 book where she described from first-hand experience what it's like to be poor. Things have not gotten better since then.

Unfortunately, this type of writing is the sort that will never be read by those who stand to learn the most from it.

1. Those people won't learn unless they are forced to live it
If this mess does anything, I hope it collapses all the houses of cards built on derivatives trading. A lot of greedheads are going to find themselves relatively poor if that is allowed to happen. They need poverty desperately. It's the only thing that has a chance of turning them into human beings.

And it shows how far downhill this country has gone.
