Long Island Bus Driver Fired After Rescuing 3 Police Detectives During Hail Storm

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A Long Island school bus driver was called into his boss’ office expecting commendation. Instead, he said he was fired for helping three police officers stranded in a violent storm — and transporting them in his school bus.

School bus driver George Daw lost his job Monday in a firing flap that began during last week’s freak and violent hail storm. He was quite emotional when he spoke to CBS 2’s Jennifer McLogan.

“Who wouldn’t be? It’s crazy,” Daw said.

Daw snapped pictures as a near-monsoon moved through New Hyde Park. Traffic was stopped, cars were submerged and drivers panicked.

4. Thought balloon....
I wonder how many cases of dickish and nonsensical inflexibility in "policy" is due to insurance companies?

I remember when I was a kid fences going up around empty lots, diving boards being removed from public swimming pools, and all sorts of "you can't do that anymore" things, not because of regulations or overprotective parents, but because of fear of a huge jack up of their liability insurance rates.

7. Insurance companies only pay when there is a lawsuit
It takes a court order after all.

Heaven knows they won't pay on their own.

10. That's exactly what I was just thinking.
The principal was worried about his insurance rates.

6. If this doesn't speedily get reversed...

...I see a lot more "citations for operating with defective
equipment" in store for Educational Bus. You know: worn
tires, defective lamps/horns, and the like.

In other words, either as a result of adverse publicity or
because the managers will soon be reminds of the stupidity
of their decision, this firing will be recinded soon.

8. I remember a time when we would all read this and say, well, of course, it was New York.
But today, that could happen anywhere.

9. Yet another example of the raging success of "zero tolerance" policies.
Are we so far gone that company policy trumps exercising personal judgment and demonstrating compassion? Well I suppose we can't mourn the decline of critical thinking skills if we're no longer expected to need or use them.
