July 2011 in Oklahoma: The hottest month in any state - ever.

from the Tulsa World:

Gary McManus, associate state climatologist with the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, said July's temperature average statewide of 89.1 degrees was not only the hottest month in state history, but the hottest month for any state in U.S. recorded history.

McManus said this is based on temperature records that date back to 1895 for the 48 contiguous states. However, he said it is safe to say that Alaska and Hawaii wouldn't have topped Oklahoma's month, either.

"Climatologically, neither one would come close," McManus said.

July's average temperature was calculated using measurements throughout a day - ranging from the low, often in the early morning, to the high, usually in the afternoon. To formulate a statewide average, McManus said temperatures were recorded from 120 Oklahoma Mesonet sites, including at least one in each county. ..........(more)

1. But, but, but, there's no such thing as climate change.
Evidence be damned say the deniers.

5. That is seasonal weather patterns.
climate change is exactly that.

"Global Warming" is not entirely accurate as the models suggest wilder and more drastic swings both up and down in temperatures.

6. Yes. Case in Point. Oklahoma. Oklahoma had its LOWEST recorded temp this year
and tied for it's highest.

-27 to 120.

That is indeed wild temperature extremes.

Got to go dig out my heavy jacket as it is barely going to make 100 today.

11. During the summer, Arizona is somewhat mild in the northern part of the state,,,
so it would bring down the state average quite a bit.

12. that's true. Forgot about Flagstaff and other places like that
I lived in Oklahoma for 5 years. It would get pretty hot. Its so flat. They were the center of the dust bowl back in the 30s. I hadn't realized it lasted 10 years! Wonder if this is a sign of things to come.

18. I thought the same thing
But the northern part isn't as hot as the south. I think the south is so hot that it should be enough to average out, but whatever.

20. Temperatures here in Oklahoma
have been matching or exceeding those in Phoenix for most of the month of July.

Real temps have commonly been exsceeding 110 degrees in Oklahoma this year.

Most of the state is in an extreme drought. Some places here have only had an inch of rain since last Halloween.

13. My sister lives in OK city
and interestingly enough, I was born in Tulsa but we moved right afterwards.

She said it is literally the hottest they have ever experienced. My only memory of OK city is visiting her at Christmas time and it was so damn cold, that Michigan in January seemed warm.

I spent several years living away from here over the decades, but I can't remember anything like this summer, ever :(

14. My partner and I ran into several OK ranchers driving through the state
I feel for these folks...selling cattle early to keep them from dropping dead on the field. That affects the price of beef. The little diners we stopped in were brutally empty. The people in Ok are HURTING. I feel for them, big time.

15. Will these ranchers continue to vote against their interests?
And let their cattle keep dropping dead by electing people like Inhofe who oppose any attempt to address climate change?

16. The ranchers we talked to were getting federal subsidies,so I'm not sure they were Republican
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 08:51 AM by w8liftinglady
They were very grateful for the Fed Help.
Not all who work in farming and ranching are Republicans.

17. Of course they will (keep voting for Republicans).
And Nature's lessons will likewise continue until the
voting for Republicans is stopped, one way or another.

19. The rural areas of Oklahoma tend to be Dem
The Republican insanity seems to largely reside in the state's two large metropolitan areas.

23. On the Oklahoma border in Arkansas,
and it has been brutal.
Thankfully, we have a spring and a great well.
We could keep most stuff watered,
but even then some of our Veggies just collapsed from the HEAT, and we lost a couple of young fruit trees.

We got out first decent rain since May at dawn this morning,
and it came in from Oklahoma, so those folks got some too.

This Summer has been Physically & Emotionally draining.
If this is the New Normal, a lot of people are in serious trouble.

The Ogallala Aquifer, a huge aquifer that lies under a big part of the central/West and the source of WATER for millions, including Oklahoma, dropped 5 FEET this year,
and it only replenishes at 1/2" per year.
