A 30-year-old Lincoln Southeast graduate was among the dead Saturday when a U.S. Army helicopter was shot down in western Afghanistan.
Sgt. Patrick Hamburger, 30, a member of the Nebraska Army National Guard, was confirmed dead Sunday by his family. He was one of 30 Americans killed when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter was reportedly brought down by enemy fire.
His step-father, DeLayne Peck of Lincoln, said the family has learned Hamburger was the only Nebraskan onboard.
“He was just an amazing young man,” Peck said. “We lost one of the best of a generation. We just can't fathom the loss here. We've cried ourselves out.”
The U.S. Department of Defense has not released the names of the 38 Americans and Afghans killed when the helicopter was shot down Saturday morning. The Associated Press reported that 30 U.S. troops, including 22 Navy Seals and a search dog, were killed along with seven Afghan soldiers and an interpreter.
Hamburger, who was assigned to the 2-135th General Support Aviation Battalion, had been in Afghanistan for about a week, Peck said. He joined the National Guard when he was 18 and moved with his unit from Lincoln to Grand Island.
