3 Big Victories for Obama & Dems in Debt Ceiling Fight – Republicans Just Trying to Save Face

The current debt ceiling battle is sputtering its last coughs. While Republican leaders are tinkling their victory triangles, a more nuanced view reveals that Obama and Dems are the ones who outplayed the GOP.

Yes, on the surface, Dems didn’t get Republicans to open their tight fists and offer any revenue. But the devil’s in the details ...

1. In summary: The Republicans got none of the choice cuts they wanted.
No cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, or programs for the poor.

Big cuts, to the tune of over a trillion dollars total, to defense and homeland security.

No itemized cuts, so individual programs can be protected.

No cuts until 2013, to protect the economy, by which point we'll hopefully have a Democratic House again.

And the mandatory expiration of the Bush tax cuts.

3. Absolute nonsense!
Try as you folks might, this simply will not fly. Obama has betrayed the fundamental principles of the Democratic Party and his own promises during the campaign. I take solace in the fact that it appears most DU'ers understand the "details" of this plan as well as the equally important broader implications of this deal.

Cheers!

I just wish these articles would have waited until the final vote.
I am afraid republicans will read this and see what just happened to them.

8. The debate was fought on Republican terms: size of cuts, who gets cut, no tax increases.

If the debate had been fought on equal grounds, there would have been tax increases for the rich.

We say the Republicans lost because the size of the cuts were less than the Republicans wanted.
In a recession, do we really want to reduce government spending? I thought economists said no.

We say the republicans lost because Defence might get cut.
The Republicans started to throw a tantrum about Defence spending cuts.
I don't believe, for one moment, Defence spending will get cut.
I expect a special appropriation to go through, to restore any Defence spending cuts.

The Republicans got their wish about tax increases for the rich.
It does not feel like we have shared sacrifice.
When the time comes, the Republicans will say,
"If you want to end the Bush tax cuts for the rich,
the Bush tax cuts for the poor and middle class will end too."
We will capitulate. We will let the Bush tax cuts continue for everyone.

If we "won" this debate, there would be tax increases on the rich.
The poor and middle class would be receiving more help, and paying less taxes.

I'm trying to think of an analogy, but am having trouble.
It's like saying a bully, at school, beats us up every day.
This deal is like saying the bully will agree to beat us up every other day.
We haven't won. We're still getting beat up. The bully hasn't been stopped.

This is not a victory.

11. No other president has ever had to give away..
.. ANYTHING to get a debt ceiling raise. But when Obama makes a COMPLETELY ONE SIDED DEAL. it is somehow a victory.

And people think only the tea baggers are STUPID.

15. What will prevent the GOPhers from
pulling this stunt again on some bill that will cleverly sidestep the 'successes' in this bill?
There are many nooks and crannies in the rules governing Congress. It is not nearly as straightforward as one sees on Schoolhouse Rock.
Please don't tell me the President or the Dems will step up and stop it. Been there seen that.

Captain Carlsbad is leading the way.

22. Teabaggers don't care about defense, and they rule the roost
They will happily accept a few insignificant defense cuts (paltry compared to the bohemoth size of the defense budget) to make certain there are cuts to entitlements. They can barely restrain their glee at the prospect. It's what they came to DC to do, and it is almost within their grasp. Bookmark this prediction if you like, it will come to pass.
